The Learning Squad. Hanover – Horton Elementary 2016 - 2017. Meet Mrs. Balfour. This is my 19 th year teaching fourth grade. I love this age and the amount of learning that takes place. 2 children: Alec a senior in High school and Sean a 9 th grader.

  1. The Learning Squad Hanover – Horton Elementary 2016 - 2017

  2. Meet Mrs. Balfour This is my 19th year teaching fourth grade. I love this age and the amount of learning that takes place. • 2 children: Alec a senior in High school and Sean a 9th grader. • We love to Camp, share books and watch movies together. • I love to read, gardens and spend time with my family.

  3. Entry Way • All students/parents will need to wait in the entryway until the doors open at 8:30 am. • Students going to Early Impressions Child Care, our new before and after school day care, will be able to go through the office. • Parents picking up students at the end of the day will need to wait in the new entryway until school is dismissed. There is a sign-out sheet per grade level. Please be sure that I know you pick up • your child!!!

  4. Specials Schedule Monday: Library 9:35 – 10:10 Gym 2:15 – 2:50 Tuesday: STEAM- 9:35-10:10 Wednesday: Technology 9:35 -10:10 Thursday: Gym 9:35 -10:10 Friday: STEAM 9:35-10:10

  5. Classroom Communication • Planners: • Sign daily – notes, bus or pick up info, teacher comments. Feel free to write notes in the comment section. • CLUE Folder- Has spelling words, Lunch Menu, Homework, graded work to stay home and notes. Weekly Email Communication • Please leave your email with me. (Sign up) • No email? I will send home notes home in planner pocket weekly

  6. Classroom Management • School wide use of Nurtured Heart approach (Focusing on the Positives) • Behavior Rubrics: Students will have a copy in the pocket in the back of the planner. • Class Dojo • Reason for resets • Off task behavior • Shouting out • Interrupting Others • Troubles in specials • Hallway Misbehavior (not interrupting other classrooms)

  7. Brain Break and Snack Lunch is late in fourth grade (1:05) so snack is very important • Students have the opportunity to go outside each day. This is an extra recess the fourth grade teachers provide. • Students may be in for Brain Break Detention if: • They have missing or late assignments • Have trouble following playground rules

  8. Fourth Grade Curriculum • Common Core Parents Guides for Math and ELA • Spelling based on student’s knowledge of spelling patterns. • Social Studies taught by Mrs. Beach • Science taught by Mrs. Balfour

  9. Student at home projects • Bring in pictures to decorate our writers notebooks • Mystery bags • Disguise a turkey for a writing project • Electric Game Boards • Think Energy Kits and Surveys

  10. Field Trips We try to cover some of the cost of our trips by running the fourth grade school supply store, Supplies R Us. However, there will still be a cost per student. • Potter Park Zoo- Students will research how a zoo runs for a writing assignment. • JC-Potter Center for a play. • State Capitol Tour and Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing.

  11. Objectives Scores for Report Cards • 4 – Consistently and Independently Meets and Exceeds Standards • 3 – Meets Standards • 2 – Approaches Standards: Needs Additional Practice and Support • AC – Below Standards: Area of Concern .
