  1. Observing & Analysing Movement Yr 12 PE Studies Unit 2B

Observing & Analysing Movement • The physical activities in which we participate are made up of basic MOVEMENT PATTERNS such as running, stopping, throwing and striking. • These movement patterns are adapted to suit the particular activity in which they are being applied. Eg. Striking – softball, cricket, tennis etc • When this adaptation occurs the basic movement pattern becomes known as a SKILL.

When the same skill is performed in a particular way, it is known as a TECHNIQUE Eg using a top-spin or slice on the backhand in tennis • Biomechanics can play a key role in the analysis of movement patterns, skills and techniques as we strive to enhance our performance. How???? By providing a systematic strategy and principles that can be applied.

TECHNIQUE ANALYSIS Information on technique that can be gained through qualitative analysis can be of 2 types: • Descriptive information • Causal information Descriptive Information Enables the analysis of skills such as: • Correct sequencing of movement • Release position of the ball • Racquet trajectory needed to for backspin

  5. This type of info is useful to the coach for providing +ve feedback to the performer. It enables the coach to make meaningful statements eg “Good shot, you followed through with your fingers to the basket that time. Causal Information Cause-effect info enables the correction of the cause of ineffective movement, rather than simply addressing the results. Often, too much time is spent correcting the symptom rather than the cause of the problem.

  6. Analysing Basic Movement Patterns The analysis of technique can be simplified to some extent, if we remember that movement patterns apply across a wide range of activities, and that biomechanical principles often apply to more than one movement pattern. For eg. The principle of summation of momentum applies to both throwing and striking View the following video clips and compare the performances to the tables provided. The tables provide an overview of the biomechanical principles of running, throwing and striking
