How can we manage our assets if we don’t know what we have?

  5. Definition • GIS (Geographic Information System) – a collection of people, process, hardware and software used for capturing, managing, analyzing and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information It’s not all about a technology “solution”!

Definition Analogy Asset Management – Asset Management can be defined as an integrated approach involving planning, engineering and finance to effectively manage existing and new municipal infrastructure in a sustainable manner to maximize benefits, reduce risk and provide satisfactory levels of service to the community user in an environmentally and ecologically responsible manner NAMWG (National Asset Management Working Group)

  9. Geodatabase Data Characteristics • Spatial Data – where are the features located? • Attribute Data – what are the feature properties?

Attribute Data The Sky’s the Limit! • Engineering planning – diameters, materials, elevations, specifications etc. • Public Works – service records, location, specifications, condition etc. • Capital Planning (Asset Management) – age, condition, service life • Financial – age, cost, amortization • Emergency Response – hydrant locations and types, road networks and traffic control

Geodatabase Data Population Consider the following 2 input streams: • Active data population - existing digital plans, hardcopies, field surveys etc. • Infrastructure change (new construction and maintenance/operations) - ensuring data is recorded as infrastructure and land use changes (MMCD Municipal CAD Standards Project) Contracts!

  13. Accuracy • Accuracy requirements determines data collection methods • What will the data be used for? • No engineer will use 10 year old geodatabase data, that was recorded with millimeter accuracy, for detailed design purposes

  14. Data Collection • Cadastre first! • Existing digital drawings • Paper drawings (scanning) • GPS / Total Station • Data collection as part of both infrastructure and land development projects
