Processed foods are the main source of the sodium Canadians consume and make up over 70% of average daily sodium intake source: www.sodium101.ca Only about 15 % of our sodium intake comes from salt added during cooking or at the table. Unprocessed whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and fresh cuts of meat contain very little sodium. The sodium “naturally” present in foods only accounts for 10-15 % of our daily intake.   2. June is Stroke Month Did you know? Just 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity, coupled with a 5-10% reduction in body weight, produces a 58%reduction in diabetes. People with Diabetes have 1.5-2.5 greater risk for ischemic stroke. Diabetes is strongly correlated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and being overweight. Lifestyle changes such as dietary modifications and exercise work best in preventing diabetes. A brisk walk for as little as 30 minutes a day can improve your health in many ways and reduce your risk for Stroke. Regular activity helps prevent and control risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity.   6. June is Stroke Month Did you know? The amount of sodium in 2½ pickles is 1550 mg. That is 103% of recommended daily sodium intake! High sodium consumption leads to high blood pressure, or hypertension, which is the cause of more than half of the 50,000 strokes in Canada every year.
