  1. “The Abomination of Desolation” Dan. 08

  2. Dan. 8:1-2 8:1 In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar the king a vision appeared to me, Daniel, subsequent to the one which appeared to me previously. 2 I looked in the vision, and while I was looking I was in the citadel of Susa, which is in the province of Elam; and I looked in the vision and I myself was beside the Ulai Canal.

  3. Dan. 8:3-4 Then I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a ram which had two horns was standing in front of the canal. Now the two horns were long, but one was longer than the other, with the longer one coming up last. I saw the ram butting westward, northward, and southward, and no other beasts could stand before him nor was there anyone to rescue from his power, but he did as he pleased and magnified himself.

  4. Dan. 8:5-6 • 5 While I was observing, behold, a male goat was coming from the west over the surface of the whole earth without touching the ground; and the goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes.

  5. Dan. 8:6-7 He came up to the ram that had the two horns, which I had seen standing in front of the canal, and rushed at him in his mighty wrath. I saw him come beside the ram, and he was enraged at him; and he struck the ram and shattered his two horns, and the ram had no strength to withstand him. So he hurled him to the ground and trampled on him, and there was none to rescue the ram from his power.

  6. Dan. 8:8 Then the male goat magnified himself exceedingly. But as soon as he was mighty, the large horn was broken; and in its place there came up four conspicuous horns toward the four winds of heaven.

  7. Greek Empire

  8. Empires Seen So Far Babylon Medio-Persia Greece Rome New-Rome (The Beast)

  9. Empires in Daniel 8 X 8:20 “The ram which you saw with the two horns represents the kings of Media and Persia.”

  10. Empires in Daniel 8 X 21 "The shaggy goat represents the kingdom of Greece, and the large horn that is between his eyes is the first king...

  11. Dan. 8:9-11 9 Out of one of them [the 4 horns on the goat] came forth a rather small horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Beautiful Land. 10 It grew up to the host of heaven and caused some of the host and some of the stars to fall to the earth, and it trampled them down. 11 It even magnified itself to be equal with the Commander of the host; and it removed the regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was thrown down. Dan. 7:8 …this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth uttering great boasts…

  12. Dan. 8:12-14 12 And on account of transgression the host will be given over to the horn along with the regular sacrifice; and it will fling truth to the ground and perform its will and prosper. 13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to that particular one who was speaking, "How long will the vision about the regular sacrifice apply, while the transgression causes horror, so as to allow both the holy place and the host to be trampled?" 14 He said to me, "For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the holy place will be properly restored."

  13. Empires in Daniel Dan.7 Dan.2 Dan.8 “a rather small horn”

  14. Similarities with Chapter 7 Both are opposed to God 7:25 cf. 8:11. Both persecute believers 7:25 cf. 8:23-end. Both associated with End Times (7:8, 25,6 cf.8:17,19). Both called “The Little Horn” Differences with Chapter 7 In ch.7 comes out of the Roman empire, but ch.8 comes from the Greek. Horn in Dan.7 tied to 10 nation group (7:24) but here, tied to 4 divisions of Greek empire. Little horn in Dan.7 given 3 1/2 years, in Dan.8 “2300 evenings and mornings” (6.5 yrs) The “Little Horn” ?

  15. What is the Dan. 8 “Little Horn” ? • Similar, but different from Chapter 7. • An actual historical figure: Antiochus IV • 8th ruler in the Selucid dynasty • Became a religious persecutor of Israel. • Tried to force Jews to worship Greek gods. • Killed Onias III, high priest, 170 bc. • Erected statues of Zeus in the temple--led to Maccabean revolt. (2Mac.4:34ff) • Died in 164 bc (6.5 yrs after killing Oniasis).

  16. The Little Horn? • Similar, but different from Chapter 7. • An actual historical figure: Antiochus IV. • Antiochus: a Fulfillment of Prophecy • 2300 days - the duration of the original Abomination.(He killed the high priest in 170 bc, died in 164 bc). • v.24 “mighty…not by his own power” – was not an heir to the throne, but seized it by intrigue (assasination). • V.24 “…broken without human agency” - Died of disease. 8:17 "Son of man," he said to me, "understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.“ 8:19 "Son of man," he said to me, "understand that the vision concerns the time of the end."

  17. “Anti-Type” “Type” AntiochusIV “The Beast” Double Reference “PropheticGap”

  18. The Little Horn? • Similar, but different from Chapter 7. • An actual historical figure. • Fulfillment of Prophecy. • He is typical of the Beast. • Both commit an “abomination of desolation”. 'Shamen' 8:13 “How long will the vision about the regular sacrifice apply, while the transgression causes horror, so as to allow both the holy place and the host to be trampled?” 14 He said to me, "For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the holy place will be properly restored." 9:27 “And on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

  19. 7 Year Tribulation Period Abom The Abomination of Desolation • Desecration of the Temple. • Occurred once already: 170 bc • Also occurs in the End Times. Jesus: Matt 24:15,16 “Therefore when you see the Abomination of Desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. . . Great Tribulation Jesus: Matt 24:21 . . .For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved. . .”

  20. Peaceful Rise to Power 7 Year Period Great Tribulation Abom The Abomination of Desolation • Desecration of the Temple. • Occurred once already: 170 bc • Pertains to the End Times. • Exalts himself above God. Dan. 8:11 It [the little horn] even magnified itself to be equal with the Commander of the host; Paul: 2 Thess. 2:3,4 “Let no one in any way deceive you, for it [the day of the Lord] will not come unless the apostasy [“falling away”] comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.” Rev.13:5-7 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. 6 He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 7 He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them… All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast…

  21. The Abomination of Desolation • Desecration of the Temple. • Occurred once already: 170 bc • Pertains to the End Times. • Exalts himself above God. • God’s “restraining influence” is removed. “Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6 And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time…but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.”2 Thes.2:5-6

  22. The Abomination of Desolation • Desecration of the Temple. • Occurred once already: 170 bc • Pertains to the End Times. • Exalts himself above God. • God’s “restraining influence” is removed. • Accompanied by “Signs and Wonders”. Rev.13:11f - Then I saw another beast, coming out of the earth…12 He made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast… 13 And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men. 1 Tim. 4:1 (NASB-U) But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons…

  23. The Abomination of Desolation • Desecration of the Temple. • Occurred once already: 170 bc • Pertains to the End Times. • Exalts himself above God. • God’s “restraining influence” is removed. • Accompanied by “Signs and Wonders”. • Proceeded by “The Great Apostasy”. 2 Thess. 2:3,4 “Let no one in any way deceive you, for it [the day of the Lord] will not come unless the apostasy comes first…”

  24. The “Great Apostacy” “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money… having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.” 2 Tim.3:1-2

  25. Bible is NOT the Inerrant Word of God:Among 7,441 Graduating Protestant Seminarians… "It is not unfair to allege that among denominations like Episcopal, United Methodist, United Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, the Lutheran Church in America, and the Presbyterian Church U.S. there is not a single theological seminary that takes a stand in favor of biblical infallibility. And there is not a single seminary where there are not faculty members who disavow one or more of the major teachings of the Christian faith" (Harold Lindsell, Battle for the Bible, pp. 145-146.) “The death of God is an historical event – that God has died in our Comsos, in our history and in our existence…the new theology hopes to give support to those who live as Christian Atheists.” President of Emory Seminary, quoted by Lidsell, Battle for the Bible, page 154. 27. The New Religion • “I’m OK, You’re OK”. • Absolutely no absolutes! • Post-Modern Age: “Spiritual Seekers” • Always keep seeking, never “find”. • Experience-oriented outlook. • “Signs and Wonders” = A Spiritual Vacuum

  28. 1999 Gallup Findings • 8 in 10 Americans “hunger to experience spritual growth” • 76% Consider themselves “Christian”. • In 1963, 2 out of 3 people believed that the Bible was the actual word of God…By 1999, the numbers had reversed. 2 out of 3 now regard the Bible as composed of ‘divinely inspired’’ texts with ancient fables, legends and human-recorded moral codes. Gallup: “The celebration of Easter... is central to the faith, yet three teenagers in ten--and 20 percent of those teenagers who attend religious services regularly--do not know why Easter is celebrated." 32. The Great “Falling Away” “But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, [2] by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron.” 1 Tim. 4:1-2 (NASB-U)

He will even oppose the Prince of princes, But he will be broken without human agency.

  35. Daniel 8:26 26 "The vision of the evenings and mornings Which has been told is true; But keep the vision secret, For it pertains to many days in the future."
