  2. Welcome to the Millenials or Generation YBorn 1981 and On • This presentation is for brand new college graduates looking for their first professional position as well as for recent college grads looking for promotions, seeking to change industries or the just plain bored.

Dominant Characteristics Restlessness Craves challenge and change Used to guidance from parents Large loan balances Small demographic group Highly social Technologically dependent Work Characteristics High need for excitement and variety Job hopping seen as positive Looking for health benefits Work seen as a way to pay for lifestyle Low degree of traditional loyalty to employer Layoffs part of life Twenty something…

  4. Generation XBorn 1961- 1980 • Work values greatly influenced by dot.com demise in 1980’s • Expect to work many hours weekly to keep job

  5. Late Baby BoomersBorn 1946-1960 • Present work structure and reward systems organized by Baby Boomers • Work values include: Timeliness, attention to detail, follow through, responsibility, reliability

  6. Why are the Twenties Turbulent? • Need to reestablish sense of self • No longer part of a K-16 system • Different rules of success in working world • Oprah Winfrey calls this generation, “disconnected”

  7. Credo or Misconception? • “Go to school, do well, get a job, get married, buy a house, have children, work some more…”

  8. Generation Y “Blues” • Lack of knowledge of career options • Not knowing how to move between jobs • Not knowing how to change industries without retraining • Post college “blues”- sadness, disconnection, loneliness, isolation, lack of adequate social connections • Tyranny of “too many choices”- generates anxiety, what if’s, overeating, retail therapy
