A Psychological Skills Training Program (PSTP) • Initial meeting with athletes &/or coaches • Explain how PST is a tool among many • Sport familiarization / education (for the sport psychologist) • Evaluation and needs assessment examples: what are key mental skills needed? Reason for performance blocks? Potential intervention targets?

  5. Evaluation tools • Interview • Performance profiling • How athlete rates self on key psych skills • Observation • Objective inventories

  6. Goal Identification • With athlete, devise program for improving weaknesses (using athlete’s strengths if possible) • How will outcomes be evaluated?

  7. Intervention Strategies • Thought-control strategies (e.g., self-talk) • Attentional-focus strategies (e.g., concen-tration control) • Emotion-control strategies (e.g., arousal control, relaxation, imagery) • Behavioral strategies (e.g., goal-setting, simulation) • Performance routine

  8. Outcome evaluation • Feedback from athlete, coaches, etc. • Examples of criteria: • Performance • Attitude • Commitment • Personal Development • Reassess goals and modify as necessary
