  2. Before you give up your computer • A. Have you made a backup folder on your network drive (or possibly a flash drive) and made copies of the folders/files saved on your computer hard drive—on the Desktop or in My Documents, which typically includes • My Pictures • My Music • My Videos Next

If you use special programs that are not part of the standard installation, have you provided the program to IT and requested that they load the program on your new computer? Next

  5. When you complete the checklist, you are ready for your new computer!Press your Escape key to end the program.

How to map a network drive • Right-click on My Computer. • Select Map Network Drive. • Choose any availableletter from the Drive:drop down list. • In the folder box type \\ko-cser-data\users\yourusername e.g. \\ko-cser-data.ads.iu.edu\users\jdoe • Click Finish and wait a few secondsfor your network drive space to open on your screen.   7. Make a backup folder • In My Computer, click the network drive to open it. • In the network drive list, right-click in the white space. • Choose New..FolderYou can name the new folder Backupdate. Back to Checklist

  8. Find documents on C: drive • In the My Computer file list, click on Local Disk C: • Click Documents and Settings. • Click your username. • Look for My Documents. Next

Backup Documents from C: drive • Copy the My Documents folder (Note: Ctrl key+ C copies; Ctrl key + V pastes.) • Navigate to your network drive and paste the My Documents folder into your backup folder. Note: Look to confirm the files and folders in My Documents did copy onto the network drive. Back to Checklist

  10. Find Desktop files on C: drive • In the My Computer file list, click on Local Disk C: • Click Documents and Settings. • Click your username. • Look for Desktop. Next

  11. Backup Desktop from C: drive • Copy the Desktop folder (Note: Ctrl key + C copies; Ctrl key + V pastes.) • Navigate to your network drive and paste the Desktop folder. (Desktop shortcuts may not work the same way in your new computer and may need to be remade.) Note: Look to confirm the files and folders in Desktop folder did copy onto the network drive.   12. Find IE Favorites on C: drive • In the My Computer file list, click on Local Disk C: • Click Documents and Settings. • Click your username. • Look for Favorites(links saved in Internet Explorer). Next

  13. Backup IE Favorites from C: drive • Copy the Favorites folder (Note: Ctrl key + C copies; Ctrl key + V pastes.) • Navigate to your network drive and paste the Favorites in your backup folder. Note: Look to confirm the list in Favorites did copy onto the network drive. Back to Checklist

  14. Find Firefox Bookmarks on C: drive • In the My Computer file list, click on Local Disk C: • Click Programs. • Click Mozilla Firefox. • Click Defaults. • Click Profile. • Look for bookmarks.htmlfile. Next

  15. Backup Firefox Bookmarks from C: drive • Copy the bookmarks.html file. (Note: Ctrl key + C copies; Ctrl key + V pastes.) • Navigate to your network drive and paste the bookmarks file in your backup folder. Note: Look to confirm the bookmarks file did copy onto the network drive. Back to Checklist

  16. Find email archive files on C: drive • If you archive your email in Outlook, you need to check to see if your email archives save on the C: drive. • Open Outlook email. • Choose File – Archive… Next

  17. Find email archive files on C: drive • Look for where your archives save, shown circled in the picture. • If it starts with C: thenyou will need to backupyour archive file. Note: Once you get your new computer, return here to change the setting so your archive stores on the network drive. Next

Backup email archive files from C: drive Here are steps to backup the auto archive file from C: • From your Start Menu, go to Control Panel. • Select Folder Options. • In the View tab underAdvanced settings: look under Files and Folders for Hidden files and folders. Select Show hidden files and folders. Next

  19. Find email archive files on C: drive • Next, go to My Computer and click on Local Disk C: • Click Documents and Settings. • Click your username. • Click AppData. • Click Local. • Click Microsoft. • Click Outlook. Next

  20. Find email archive files on C: drive • Copy the archive.pst file. • Paste it into your backup file. You will not be able to open it from this location. Just check that the file size shows sizeable content if you can view your file details. Back to Checklist

  21. Email Personal (.pst) Folders on C: • If you have created specialized Personal Folders to archive specific email messages together in a .pst file, you should check to see if you have those stored on your C: drive. • From the Start Menu, choose Search. • In the Search box, search the C: drive for *.pst • This should find all the Outlook Personal Folders on your C: drive. You can copy them and paste them into your network backup folder. Back to Checklist
