  2. Predictions • Only a few months • North • More men and money • Rebs are lazy • They cant do anything without their slaves • South • leaders graduates of West Point • Yanks are cowards

  3. Yeah…Not so much. • Fort Sumter (Union controlled) in Charleston harbor was fired upon by Southern guns. • People came out to see the battle • Many were afraid it would be over before they could join

  4. First Big Battle • Manassas, near Washington, at a muddy stream called Bull Run. • A railroad junction – transportation • Napoleons tactics didn’t work for them • Confusion and bravery reigned • T.J. Jackson, a Conf. General, stood like a stone wall in the face of battle

  5. Wool uniforms – or whatever they chose to wear - didn’t always look the same. Lots of men died because of that.

  6. Questions • 1. Why did both sides believe that they would win a quick victory? • 2. What factors were unconsidered by both sides in their thinking about the war?

  7. Homework • Due Tomorrow- • Worksheets #1 and 2 • Ch. 2 Questions • Essay • Study Preface I, II, and Chapters 1 and 2. You may use any notes that you can fit on a 3x5 card! • There will be a test Friday!
