Yeah…Not so much. • Fort Sumter (Union controlled) in Charleston harbor was fired upon by Southern guns. • People came out to see the battle • Many were afraid it would be over before they could join
First Big Battle • Manassas, near Washington, at a muddy stream called Bull Run. • A railroad junction – transportation • Napoleons tactics didn’t work for them • Confusion and bravery reigned • T.J. Jackson, a Conf. General, stood like a stone wall in the face of battle
Wool uniforms – or whatever they chose to wear - didn’t always look the same. Lots of men died because of that.
Questions • 1. Why did both sides believe that they would win a quick victory? • 2. What factors were unconsidered by both sides in their thinking about the war?
