  1. Socio-economic Vulnerability in the Namakwa District Municipality: prospects for food sovereignty and agro-ecology 13 March 2012 Presented by: Harry May and Jan Adams

  2. Namakwa District • NDM is the largest District Municipality in South Africa with an area of 126747 km² and stretching over a distance of about 1 000 kilometres from Alexander Bay in the northwest to Fraserburg in the southeast. • 6 Cat B Municipalities: Hantam, Karoo-Hoogland, Khai-ma, Kamiesberg, Richtersveld, Nama Khoi • Semi-arid area with high levels of biodiversity

  3. Major Economic Activities • Mining • Agriculture • Conservation • Fishing • Services

  4. Land tenure • Total agriculture land = 13.95 m ha • Commercial farms = 10.97 m ha • Conservation land • Act 9 Areas • State land • Land Reform

  5. Key socio-economic vulnerabilities Deep-rooted poverty and high levels of unemployment High level of dependency on the state Weak local governments/ municipalities Weak civil society

  6. Poverty and dependency on state • E.g. Nama Khoi with 10933 hh. 13.3% have no income and 18.5% of hh have income of less than R800/ month. 4181 or 38.17% receive indigent grants • Kamiesberg 14.5% with no income and 40.2% with less than R800/month • Khai Ma - 97.41% receives indigent grants

  7. Likely trends in land use pressures and land use types • Increase in agriculture • In 1997 an amount of 1125485 ha was needed to accommodate the livestock that were on communal land
