  2. BAP vs. AS • Accounting Society: • CSULB club • No hours requirements • Access to all events • Beta Alpha Psi • International business fraternity • 75 hour commitment for the semester you’re pledging • Priority when events reach capacity

Benefits of BAP & AS • Benefits of Accounting Society • Networking • Resume Building • Interview Confidence • Development of Professionalism and Communication Skills • Understanding of Accounting and alternative career paths • Friendships beyond College • Community Service • Additional Benefits of Beta Alpha Psi • Strong Work Ethic • Social Development • Supervisory Role • Teaming • Internationally recognized—strong network!

Networking • Comfort in knowing people at a firm prior to interviewing (and starting). • Ability to interview at firms later on in career. • Reaching out to friends/colleagues at other firms who specialize in different industries/sectors. • Additional career opportunities. • Enhanced reputation at current employer (references for good/bad candidates) • Alumni connections are very strong.

  5. Resume Building • First frame of reference for employer. • Certain industries have different formats. It is good to know industry for which you are an applicant. • Exposure to firm members (Resume Workshop) and/or Officer Board. • Understanding of what to write and what to not write.

  6. Interview Confidence • Practice makes perfect. • Learning to cater to your audience. • Defining what to leave out of your interview. • Networking (Mock Interviews). • Rehearsing potential answers to common questions. • Involvement spurs experiences to comment on—behavioral questions!

  7. Professionalism and Communication Skills • Learning how to act around professionals. • Figuring out how to effectively communicate with peers, those senior to you, and those who potentially might be hiring you. • Strengthen your written and verbal communication skills. • Understanding how to articulate your ideas and thoughts. • Determining what is appropriate and what may be construed as inappropriate.

  8. Understanding of Accounting & alternative career paths • What is accounting and where do I fit into it? • What are the differences between the firms? Big Four, Mid-Size, Regional, etc. • Which type of accounting is right for you? • Are there other opportunities besides public accounting straight out of school? • What is the career timeline and where can I expect to be in 10 years? • Great forum to ask questions.

  9. Friendships beyond College • Relationships - Marriages • Colleagues at firms • Business References • Business Partners • Candidate Inquiries

Community Service • Develops critical professional management skills of working with people who have different timeframes, values and interests • Teaches us to look beyond ourselves and understand the role we can play in our community and country. • Employers/Masters (MBA) Programs/Family/Friends appreciate the selflessness of those who volunteer.

  11. Strong Work Ethic • Responsibilities increase through involvement • Organizational skills are developed and learned • A strong work ethic goes hand in hand with initiation and continued participation. • Multi-tasking of keeping up with school, BAP requirements, and family obligations.

  12. Social Development • Forced development through teaming and challenging obstacles of fundraising and managing many time consuming events. • Sharing similar experiences with many fellow members. • Working through highs and lows. • Outside socials celebrating holidays and milestones.

  13. Supervisory Role • Fiduciary responsibility of supervising all members to succeed in obtaining a job/deciding their career path. • Assisting with resumes, interviews, scheduling, etc. • Working in groups to accomplish shared vision/goals (very similar to working in public accounting) • Managing peers. • Liaison between firm members and students

  14. Teaming • Nothing is more important than learning how to work with teams. • Figuring out best practices. • Managing personalities and different work ethics. • Learning how to develop the weaknesses of certain team members and playing off strengths of other team members.

  15. Bottom line • GET INVOLVED!!!! • You get what you give. • Job isn’t guaranteed, but this definitely helps. • Gives you tools you won’t find elsewhere. • Real-life examples stand before you—there’s a reason we all take the time to come back to encourage you all to get involved!
