  3. Why It’s Important • Managers need to recognize leadership qualities and styles that: • Motivate employees to be creative and productive.

  4. Leadership Qualities Leadership means providing direction and vision for a company. Being a manager is not the same thing as being a leader. Managing is a job. Leading is a skill. Sometimes a good leader isn’t even the person in charge.

  5. Figure 8.1 WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT LEADERSHIP? Respond to these statements about leaders as “true” or “false.” They show some of the perceptions people sometimes have about leadership. How would you respond to each statement?

  6. Motivation Motivation means having initiative, or the desire to take action and get things done without being told. In business, initiative is the main quality of an entrepreneur. Good leaders often motivate by inspiring others with their energy, and “charisma,” or charm.

  7. Confidence To lead others you need to inspire their confidence. The best way to do this is by having self-confidence. • People have more confidence in a leader who is willing to make mistakes and learn from them.

  8. Communication A leader must be good athuman relations - the ability to communicate with people. Leaders use gestures, draw pictures, or tell stories to communicate their goals and motivate others. They also LISTEN!

  9. Integrity Integrity means having and holding to principles like honesty, loyalty, and fairness. Integrity is the most highly valued quality in a leader.

Developing Leadership Skills You can learn leadership skills in a number of ways: • Through books, DVDs, and leadership courses • Shadow a leader and study what he/she does. • Join a club or team to develop communication skills. • Take initiative to head a committee • or take on extra responsibility.

  15. Styles of Leadership There are three basic styles of leadership: • Autocratic • Democratic • Free rein • Leadership in Teams is rapidly becoming the fourth style of leadership

  16. Autocratic Leadership Autocratic means “self-ruling.” Autocratic leadership is when you like to run everything yourself and answer to no one. • Assume people: • don’t like to work • avoid responsibility • have to be watched all the time.

  17. Autocratic Leadership Autocratic leaders usually control their workers through fear and intimidation. The biggest problem with autocratic leaders is that people don’t like to work for them. Useful where orders must be followed!

  18. Democratic Leadership Democratic leadership means that managers and employees work together to make decisions. Assume people want to work and have confidence in them.

  19. Free-Rein Leadership • Free-rein leadership requires the leader to: • set goals for managers and employees • leave them alone to get the job done. • Also called hands-off leadership. • These managers delegate. - OFF

  20. The reasons for a leader to delegate are: • You don’t have the time • You can focus on more important work • Gets your employees more involved • Gives your employees a chance to develop their own skills

  22. Self-Managed Teams Many companies have been putting workers onself-managed teams that supervise themselves. Companies are able to get rid of many managing jobs and replace them with a team leader.

  23. Self-Managed Teams The team usually works on a single project, like designing a video game. The team is more goal-oriented than task-oriented.

  24. The Organization of Self-Managed Teams Self-managed teams are organized in two ways: • Each team member has a special skill, or • the team selects one team leader.

The Organization of Self-Managed Teams The advantages are: • They’re faster and more efficient. • Team members learn each other’s jobs and obtain new skills • Simplifies the decision-making process • Team members learn to participate and cooperatewith each other. • Self-managed teams learn to solve their own problems.
