About NIE Netherlands Stichting Krant in de Klas (Newspapers in the Classroom) was founded in 1976 by Dutch Newspaper Publishers’ Association Three objectives: • Promote literacy and readership • Promote media literacy • Promote citizenship through newspapers in education, for all levels of education (incl. language courses for adults)

  3. Newspapers as a source for lifelong learning Educational role of newspapers is visible in shift from merely ‘bringing’ to ‘explaining’ the news. Newspapers: • … constantly keep us updated about new developments in politics, economics, society etc. • … provide background information, context • … explain the effects of these developments on our lives • … advise citizens about how to exercise their rights

  13. Conclusions Newspapers’ contribution to lifelong learning: • covering developments in media landscape • providing (online) platforms to discuss topics • triggering discussions on media impacts • organizing initiatives to empower their readers
