Terms Used for Miraculous Action • Original words translated “miracle” or “power” • Dunamis (“power”) or Exousia (“authority”) • Focus is on the event itself & its cause • Original word translated “sign” is Semeion • Focus is that signified to beholder by action • Sign may teach by: showing reason for faith (Jn. 20:30f), confirming power to act (Matt. 9:6-8) or illustrating the principle being taught (Mark 8:11-29) • Word translated “wonder” is most often Teras • It means “astonish,” “amazed,” “marvel,” “in awe,” etc. • Focus is on how man views the act or effect on witness • Words combine to give clear view of act & purpose

Miracles Not Worked Throughout Bible History • Miracles recorded in times when God was revealing Himself & His will to man • Not presented as common from Adam to Noah • Not seen as norm of daily life with Abraham • Only noted in small portion of Jewish history • Where are the miracles in book of Job? • Where are the miracles in book of Esther? • Why not seen in every time if always needed?

Miracles May Be Temporary • Example seen in selection of 70 elders from Israel to help Moses (Numbers 11) • Spirit to be put upon them (vs. 16-17) • 70 are chosen & presented (vs. 24-25) • “When the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied…” • “…but they did so no more” • KJV:“did not cease”is mistranslation • Once place confirmed, no need for more

Action of Bible Miracles Was... • INSTANTANEOUS • did not start & slowly develop over time • witnesses saw both start & full effect of action • BEYOND NATURAL EXPLANATION • witnesses repeatedly said different from norm • action did not conform to physical processes • no beginning by God & continuing by nature • EVIDENCE TO UNBELIEVER • not done to confirm believers or give 2nd grace

Pentecostal & Charismatics Say... • “Jesus is same yesterday, today & forever” • “Miracles needed to produced faith today” • “Miracles needed to confirm truth today” • “Gifts of Spirit needed to show who are God’s people today” • “Gifts needed as evidence of our salvation” • “Spirit must be working miracles today - just look at Oral Roberts or ….” • However, need to compare with Bible time
