  16. Example cooperation – education Cooperation with the business community • Degree projects & project courses • Placements • Guest lectures • Educational visits at companies • Teachers & reserchers at companies • Industry-based doctoral students • Industrial Graduate School

  17. Example cooperation – education Students solve corporate problems • Students from different engineering programmes cooperate. • They develop a technical solution which is sought after by the business community. • Both students and the business community establish valuable contacts.

  18. Staff • 80 professors • 130 senior lectures • 83 subject teachers • 33 postdoctoral research fellows • 89 other teachers • 222 doctoral students • 71 administrators • 130 technicians Total: 815 employees Pernilla Wittung-Stafshede, received the Göran Gustafsson-prize in chemistry 2009, the highest national award for scientific research.

  19. Prioritized research areas of excellence The Faculty has prioritized three research areas of excellence: • Biological Chemistry • Ecosystem Dynamics • Plant and Forest Biotechnology Umeå University has also designated Applied IT as a strategic area of development.

  20. Example of prioritized research area of excellence: Biological Chemistry Antibiotics from the Norwegian Sea • Umeå University and the University of TromsØ cooperate in the search for new antibiotics. • They study extreme organisms from the Norwegian Sea to see if they contain molecules which can be used for new medicines.

  21. Example of prioritized research area of excellence: Ecosystem Dynamics Environmental changes affect lakes • LEREC is a research area which gives a comprehensive view of the dynamics in lakes. • The researchers develop models for the ways in which environmental changes affect lakes. • Research of the flow of phosphorus, nitrogen and organic carbon is combined with for instance studies of the effect of size variations in fish populations.

  22. Example of prioritized research area of excellence: Plant and Forest Biotechnology Mapping the genes of Swedish spruce • Spruce is ecologically and economically the most important plant in Sweden. • This project will for instance give opportunities to develop gene tests on different characteristics of trees, such as fuel value, frost and disease resistance.

  23. Strategic area of development Applied IT • The area includes more than 150 talented researchers and doctoral candidates. • Example of research areas: • industrial IT • robotics and control systems • health care • media signal processing • interaction design

  24. Strategic research areas supported by the Government The faculty has the main responsibiltiy for two projects: • Bio4Energy – Energy research • Climate effects of the Baltic Sea – Marine Environment research • Researchers at the faculty are also part of the following areas: • Sustainable use of natural resources • E-science

  25. Engineering science recruitment • Umeå University has granted 60 million SEK to develop engineering science. • 32 young researchers will be recruited to strengthen the quality of the Master of Science Programmes in Engineering.

  26. Distinguished Young Researchers • Umeå University is supporting young researchers with promising careers in their fields. • 26 out of 70 researchers who was granted the award work at the Faculty of Science and Technology. • The Department of Physics was notable in receiving a total number of eight grants.

  27. Example cooperation – research Splendid cooperation • The Department of Physics and the company Siemens cooperate to develop laser-based measuring instruments. • The sensitive instruments can measure low percentage of pollutants in discharge emissions and exhaust gases.

  28. Example cooperation – research Technologies for future vehicles • IFOR – Intelligent Off-Road Vehicles – has the goal to create intelligent off-road vehicles for forestry, mining and agriculture. • It’s a cooperation beteween SLU – the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and a number of companies, for instance Komatsu Forest, BAE Systems Hägglunds and LKAB.
