Animal Farm literary terms • Propaganda- information designed to persuade others to believe certain ways. • Satire-type of writing that ridicules a serious topic. • Round Character-well-developed character; many traits given so valid inferences are possible. • Euphemism-often more sophisticated or positive way of restating common ideas. • Jargon-language associated with a particular job, hobby, or topic.

  3. Literary Terms cont. • Paradox- contradictory statement or way of thinking. • Fable- type of story with animals as main characters and has a moral lesson. • Allegory-story where everything strongly represents something else.

  4. Karl Marx: Father of Communism • Wrote communist manifesto in 1848 a. It was against capitalism I. U.S., Eng., and Germ. Systems were capitalist. II. Capitalism encourages competition in business (rich vs. poor). 2. Exiled from Russia so Paris a. wrote about the unequal distribution of wealth b. wrote about idealistic vision of future I. Everyone has all they need (all equal) c. obstacles in his way I. wealthy had all power and suppressed poor to keep it II. Poor outnumbered-advantage IV. Battle must occur

  6. The Government of Russia • Russia operated under an absolute monarch from 1721 to 1917. • The monarchs were terribly wealthy and during the early 1900’s, the poor began to fight back.

  7. Tsar Nicholas II • Nicholas was the last Tsar of Russia • Member of the Romanov royal family • His wife Alexandra was related to Queen Victoria of England. • He was forced to abdicate his throne in February of 1917. • He and his family were imprisoned in Alexander Palace

The remains of the Romanov family were thrown into a mass grave and burned with acid to disfigure the royal family. • Years later the remains were found and the family was provided a proper burial and ceremony. • Nicholas, along with his family, was canonized in 1981 by the Russian Orthodox Church.
