Saint Paul Fire Dept.Public Education Results • Follow The Footsteps To Fire Safety has been presented to over 75,000 preschool and kindergarten children. • Fires and pediatric burns in St. Paul are among the lowest in the nation compared to cities of similar size. • From 2005-2009, no fire deaths among the very young, a population targeted by current fire department public education programs.

Saint Paul Fire Public Education Results • For 12 years, 15% improvement in safety knowledge test scores (Risk Watch) • 86% reduction in children setting fires (from 200+ in 1980’s to 28 per year). • Recidivism rate of children who have successfully completed the Fire Play Intervention Program is less than 1%.

Saint Paul Fire Dept.Public Education Results • In 6 years, total injuries down 23% • falls – down 25% • motor vehicle injuries – down 32% • bike injuries – down 53% • airway obstruction incidents – down 9% • pedestrian injuries – down 26% • burns – already low, down by 32% • other injuries – down 31%

  4. Goals of Project Safe Haven • Reduce fires and fire deaths. • Residents will create and maintain a personal living environment that is safe. • Positive relationships will develop between SPFD and the community. • Efficient delivery system will be developed.

  5. Saint Paul Fire Dept.Public Education ResultsSafe Haven • 410 visits completed since 2009. • No fires, fire injuries or fire deaths of any Safe Haven participant. • No LODD in any Safe Haven homes. • No FF injuries in any Safe Haven homes.

  6. Safe Haven results • Lives saved at 407 Thomas Avenue: “…Thanks so much for coming to our home and doing the fire safety inspection and for installing smoke alarms and CO detector. Unfortunately we had a carbon monoxide leak. We are thankful the detector went off and alerted us especially since my husband is at end stage cancer and was in the bed. The FD came and aired the house out and called Xcel. It was reading at 89 but they were able to get it to 0… P.S. the kids really enjoyed being able to explore the fire truck and equipment and ask questions.
