  2. Bellringer: How does modern liberalism and conservatism view the role of the government?

  3. The Left • Left- refers to those with liberal political leanings. • Typically Democrats, some exceptions. • Want more governmental action. • Typically represented by oppressed groups.

  4. Critics from the Left • These critics support some portions of the New Deal. • BUT They don’t think the New Deal has done enough. • They want more governmental interaction, more agencies. • Concerned about the rights of the oppressed.

  5. The Right • Refers to conservatives. • Typically Republicans. • Don’t like much governmental interaction.

  6. Critics from the Right. • They do not like the New Deal. • Thinks that the agencies do too much. • Would rather have the private sector take care of economic issues. • Concerned about loss of individual rights.

Rules • A critic will be posted up on the screen, you will read or listen to the critic and decide if they are coming from the Left or the Right. • Your team captain will present the answer to myself or Coach Wolfe. • You will have 3 minutes to answer raise your card when you have your answer • We will keep a running tab on the score, the winning team will be rewarded next week. • Keep discussions soft as you do not want other teams to hear your answers.

  17. From the Left. • Wanted government to ensure equality, and prosperity. • Favors increased role of the government.

  18. Butler V United States • Supreme Court ruled the Agricultural Adjustment Act unconstitutional stating that the Federal government overstepped the boundaries set by the 10th Amendment. Stating that agricultural policies are a states right and not a duty of the federal government.

  19. From the Right. • Calls for shared powers between states and federal government. • Wants to limit role of the federal government.

  20. African Americans • “Economic conditions of blacks were disproportionately worse than those of whites, this race-based quota system did not adequately address the relief needs of African American youth. When the CCC began, few efforts were made to actively recruit African Americans. Many states, particularly in the South, passed over qualified black applicants to enroll whites. They don’t do a good job of ensuring that African Americans receive equal rights as Whites.”

Native Americans • Through 50 years of “individualization”, coupled with an ever-increasing supervision over the affairs of individuals and tribes so long as these individuals and tribes had any assets left, the Indians have been robbed of initiative, their spirit has been broken, their health undermined, and their native pride ground into the dust. The efforts at economic rehabilitation cannot and will not be more than partially successful unless they are accompanied by a determined simultaneous effort to rebuild the shattered morale of a subjugated people that has been taught to believe in its racial inferiority.

  23. From the left • Calls for an increase in “social justice” by the government helping to rebuild the culture on the Native Americans.

This power is wholesome and proper, but in the hands of political puppets of an economic autocracy, such power would provide shackles for the liberties of our people."

  25. From the Right. • Criticizes the role of government, fear of loss of individual rights.

  26. Individual Reflection • Take time and look back at the examples we have talked about how do these criticisms either support the status quo
