  2. Events in the Plot • Hate week forced Winston to work 90 hours. • This was because Oceania changed enemies from Eurasia to Eastasia. • This happens during a crowded rally. The speaker says that Oceania is at war and has always been at war with Eastasia. • New propaganda posters emerge the crowd destroys the old propaganda posters.

The Book • During the events of the week, Winston finds time to read Emmanuel Goldstein’s book. • The book covers The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism. • Traces a theory of social classes throughout recent history: High Class, Middle Class, and Low Class—the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles

  4. The Book and Geography • According to the manifesto, Eurasia was created when Russia subsumed all of Europe. • Oceania was created when the United States absorbed the British Empire. • Eastasia is made up of the remaining nations

  6. War • Goldstein writes that the war never advances significantly, as no two allied nations can defeat the third • The war is simply a fact of life that enables the ruling powers to keep the masses ignorant of life in other places • This is the real meaning of the phrase “WAR IS PEACE.”

Historical Analysis • This chapter mixes many sources of twentieth-century political theory, including works by Leon Trotsky and Karl Marx. • The novel 1984 was written in 1948 after nearly 30 years of destructive war, economic collapse, and rise in totalitarian power had dominated life in Europe.
