  3. Need to discuss The Topic? • A user asked industry experts “What happened to grid computing, it seemed to be all over 5 years ago but seems to have been overtaken by cloud computing” • Ian Foster replied to this question: “Grid is about federation, while Cloud is more about outsourcing”

Characteristics of Grid Computing • Facilitate users to remotely utilize idle computing power. • Coordinated resource sharing and problem solving in dynamic, multi-Institutional virtual organizations. • Resource-centric design. • Resource pool consists of resources provided by various organizations. • Grid middleware.

Constraints of Grid Computing • Lack of explicit business models • During grid’s evolution, WSRF emerged which declared the convergence of grid and SOA. • Whereas, cloud computing originated from Web applications with the aim to sell resources to customers e.g. Amazon and Google. • Challenge of shielding heterogeneity • Grid computing solves this by grid middleware, which introduces new heterogeneity. • In contrast, cloud computing by definition does not have heterogeneity problem.

Constraints of Grid Computing (2) • Heavy system administration burden • In grid computing, system administrators must do extra work to coordinate local administration policies with global ones. • Whereas, in cloud computing resources are owned by single organization. • Constraints on end users • In Grid computing end user have to interact with system either by pre-installed services or run the tasks directly in the grid. • Same is true for cloud computing, but there is market pressure..

Constraints of Grid Computing (3) • Difficulties in programming • Grid computing exposes unnecessary details • Application development is complex. • No mature tools for debugging and measuring the behavior of grid applications. • Whereas, in cloud computing things are getting better as • APIs are simpler with ease of use. • Debugging tools are also provided e.g. Google App Engine and Visual Studio 2010.

  8. Conclusion • At present constraints in grid computing are a big hurdle in its vast use and adaptation. • While, cloud computing provides more benefits and rewards especially without changing the resource usage habits of people. • So cloud computing seems to have a bright future than grid computing.
