  1. TEACH GRANT WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW A presentation given by Radford University Financial Aid Office and The College of Education and Human Development

  2. WHAT IS THE TEACH GRANT?? The (TEACH) Grant program provides up to $4,000 per year ($16,000 total for four-year programs) in grants to students who intend to teach full-time in high-need subject areasfor at least four years at schools that serve students from low-income families. Graduate students are also eligible for $ 4,000 per year ($ 8,000 total). The first TEACH grants will be awarded during the 2009-2010 Academic Year. (September 1st, 2009 – May 7th, 2010)

Student Eligibility Requirements In order for a student to receive a TEACH grant they must; • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), although you do nothave to demonstrate financial need. • Complete RU's Application for Federal Teach Program Consideration. • Be a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen. • Be fully admitted into a TEACH eligible major and concentration • Meet the following academic achievement requirements; • For New Incoming Students, score above the 75th percentile on one of the following college admissions test(s) • SAT, ACT, or GRE, • After the first award year; • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours for undergraduate student. (5 credit hours as a graduate student). • Complete TEACH Grant Entrance/Subsequent counseling • Sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve

What are High Need Subject Areas Currently High Need Subject Areas are; (These are subject to change depending on the high need at the time you begin your Service Agreement) • Bilingual Education and English Language Acquisition • Foreign Language • Mathematics • Reading Specialist • Science • Special Education • Other teacher shortage areas identified at the time you begin teaching. These are subject areas (not geographic areas) that are listed in the Department of Education’s Annual Teacher Shortage Area Nationwide Listing at http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/pol/tsa.doc.

  5. COUNSELING FOR TEACH GRANT Before receiving a TEACH Grant, Federal Regulations require that you complete an Entrance Counseling session. The Entrance Counseling session will provide you with information about the TEACH grant as well as the terms and conditions of a TEACH Grant service agreement. You will also be provided the rights and responsibilities that apply if your TEACH Grant becomes converted to a Direct Loan. You will also be required to complete subsequent counseling each year that you receive the TEACH grant funds. The TEACH grant will also require that you complete an Exit Counseling once you have graduated, left the University, left the TEACH eligible program or dropped below the ½ time status.

  6. Satisfactory Progress For the TEACH grant program, students must maintain a cumulative gpa of at least a 3.25in addition to meeting the financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress standards. If you stop attending classes (even if you do not officially withdraw from all classes), you will be treated as a withdrawal from the university for financial aid purposes. If you did not complete their TEACH eligible program, this could result in your TEACH grant being converted into a Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.

  8. What happens if I change majors / concentrations or do not fulfill the requirements of the service agreement? If you do not fulfill the requirements of the Agreement to Serve you will have all Teach Grant awards converted to Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan that must be repaid, with interest charged from the date when the Teach Grant was disbursed.

  11. PROCESS Once Financial Aid has reviewed applications, a list of eligible students will be sent to the College of Education and Human Development. Students on that list will be reviewed to determine if they have been admitted to the Teacher Education program and are officially in TEACH Grant eligible program – a must to receive grant.

  12. ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Minimum of 52 hours of completed course work Minimum grade point average based on program pursuing Documentation of 50 hours of observation/ experience in an educational setting

  13. ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS No record of criminal violations or violations of RU codes and policies Successful completion of HUMD 300 and EDEF 320 (may vary depending on program)

  14. ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Passing scores on praxis I and II and the VCLA Signed memorandum of understanding Completed application (written and on-line)

TEACH Grant Eligible Programs at RU • Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) • concentration in Early Childhood Education / Early Childhood Special Education • concentration in Special Education / High Incidence • concentration in Deaf / Hard of Hearing • middle school science and/or middle school mathematics

  16. TEACH Grant Eligible Programs at RU • Biology - if pursuing licensure • Chemistry - if pursuing licensure • Geology - Earth Sciences concentration and if pursuing licensure • Mathematics - if pursuing licensure • Physics - if pursuing licensure

  17. TEACH Grant Eligible Programs at RU • Education -Graduate level -  with a concentration in Science Education - licensure only students • Special Education - Graduate level – All areas seeking licensure • Reading

  18. WHAT DOES THIS REALLY MEAN FOR STUDENTS May have to apply for TEP earlier than originally planned Must maintain higher gpa than TEP requires Perhaps be more flexible / mobile to ensure employment in a school serving “students from low income families in a high need teaching field”
