  24. Verbs, Objects, and Subject Complements My mother was a good teacher. She gave me a swimming lesson. In the first sentence, was is a linking verb and teacher is a subject complement. In the second sentence, gave is an action verb, me is an indirect objects, and lesson is a direct object.

  25. Verbs, Objects, and Subject Complements A direct object follows an action verb and tells who or what receives the action of the verb. Chris told a secret. (Told is an action verb. Secret is a direct object.)
