  1. The planets

  2. Mercury • Its named after the roman messenger of the gods • Its surface is cratered because of its lack of atmosphere • Mercury is a rocky planet composed of a high percent of metallic material • The first probe to visit mercury in 1974 was the Mariner 10 and the second probe was the Messenger which did its first fly by in 2008 • Is the smallest planet in our solar system • Has no natural satellites • Can have temperatures ranging from 800 to -300 degrees f • A year on mercury is 88 earth days long

  3. Venus • Venus is named after the roman god of love and beauty • Venus’s surface has roughly 100,000 volcanoes while the rest is desert • Its has a thick sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide based atmosphere that would crush any living thing to land on its surface • Mariner 2 was the first successful probe to fly by Venus and the European probe Venera 4 was the first successful probe to enter its atmosphere • Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system with average temp of 900 degrees f year round • Venus has no moons • Is the only planet that spins in retrograde

  4. Earth • Earth is the only planet not named after a god • Earth is the only known planet to have liquid water • Earth has many features on its surface: mountains, volcanoes, deserts, forests, and canyons are just a few • Earths atmosphere is most composed of nitrogen ,oxygen, and carbon dioxide • The Latin name for earth is Terra • The earths axis is tilted at 23 degrees which affects our seasons • Has one moon each language has a different name for it Luna in Spanish Lune in French ect… • Only planet that has known intelligent life

  5. Mars • Mars is named after the roman god of war • Mars surface is red because of rust this proves that mars once had liquid water on its surface • Has weak carbon dioxide based atmosphere • Mars currently has NASA’s curiosity rover on its surface among others • Mars has frequent fierce wind storms • Mars has two moons Phobos and Deimos • Mars has had many myths of advanced alien life forms which have been disproved thus far

  6. Jupiter • Jupiter is named after the god of the gods • Jupiter has many violent storms. Its most famous is the Great Red Spot that has been raging at up to 225 mph winds for over 300 years • Jupiter has a thick atmosphere like all the “gas giants” in our solar system • Since 1973 we have sent probes to fly by Jupiter but the first to orbit the planet was the probe galileo in 1995 • Has 63 natural satellites • 1 day on Jupiter is only 10 earth hours • Is the biggest planet in our solar system

  7. Saturn • Named after the roman god Saturn the god of wealth • Saturn has no known solid surface with a liquid hydrogen and helium core • Its atmosphere is thick yet the planet has the lowest density of all the planets • Fly bys of Saturn started in 1979 with the pioneer 11 and continue today with other probes • Saturn has the largest moon. Its named Titan and its the only moon to have an atmosphere • Saturn has the most natural satellites because of its rings • Saturn’s dragon storm has up to 1,100 mph winds

  8. Uranus • Named after the Greek god Uranus the god of the sky • Like Saturn it has no solid surface • Its gassy atmosphere is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium • Its atmosphere also contains methane which absorbs red light giving the planet its blue hue • In 1986 NASA’s voyager 2 made a fly by of the planet no other probes are planned to fly by • Has 27 moons • Its core contain billions of diamonds • Its axis is sideways it also has horizontal rings

  9. Neptune • Named after the Roman god of the sea • Neptune is the stormiest planet with up to 1,300 mph winds. Its most famous storm is the great spot • Its atmosphere consists of mainly hydrogen, helium, methane, and traces of water • Voyager 2 is the only probe to encounter Neptune in 1989 • Has 13 known moons • One Neptune year is equal to 165 earth years • Is the farthest planet from the sun

  10. Planet Qualifications • 1 a planet must orbit the sun • 2 must have enough gravity to keep it spherical • 3 must be dominate gravity in its area • Pluto is now considered a dwarf planet
