Alternative Intermediate Algebra (IA) and the Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) Fall 2008 – JAOG taskforce convened due to UW concerns about Alt IA courses now at 4-5 Washington CCs. 3-year “hold harmless” agreement reached May, 2009 recommendation to JAOG. 1. “Remove the current reference to ‘intermediate algebra proficiency” from the DTA’ 2. Replace the current Q/SR requirement with: ‘College level math course (5 credits) intended for transfer. Excludes professional-technical math courses.’”

IA and DTA – Rationale • “Reinforces the mutual acceptance of college-level coursework as demonstrating college-level proficiency • Puts the DTA in line with the statewide move to higher math standards • Acknowledges the broader array of college-level math courses available to meet the DTA requirement than when the current DTA language was developed. • Avoids any need to align contents of IA with high school Algebra II, allowing the CTCs to determine the most effective means to remediate adult learners • Provides a legitimate way to remove precollege-requirements from the DTA”

  3. IA and DTA – Next Steps • JOAG responded positively and wants feedback from CTCs • Recommendation will go to transfer deans council (ATC) in fall of 2009. Transfer deans will seek input from their individual colleges and bring feedback to JAOG • Limits Q/SR requirement to MATH-prefix courses • Alt IA and Philosophy combo are problematic to UW. • Current struggles/confusion over curricular decision making. Who controls the curriculum: JAOG, IC, ATC, UW?
