  1. Matter Chemistry 332 O’Dette

  2. What is matter? • Anything that has mass and takes up space • All matter is made of submicroscopic particles called atoms • Which of the following are classified as matter? A Tree Air Heat From A Fire

  3. Types of Matter • Pure Substances – composed of only one type of atom or molecule • Element – composed of only one type of atom • EXAMPLE: Gold – Au • Found on the Periodic Table • Compound – composed of two or more elements chemically bonded together • EXAMPLE: Water – H2O • One oxygen atom is chemically bonded to two hydrogen atoms

  4. Pure Substance (Continued) • Molecule – two or more atoms chemically combined • All compounds are molecules. • Not all elements are molecules. • EXAMPLE: Oxygen versus Aluminum

  5. Types of Matter • Mixture – two or more pure substances physically combined • Homogeneous – uniform composition, aka solution • Example: Salt water

  6. Mixtures (Continued) • Heterogeneous – does not have a uniform composition, two or more distinct phases • Example: Raisin Bran
