Interview Prep Key Points of Interview Preparation • Research the organization…know WHY them? • Compare the job description with YOUR resume • Where are the points of connection? • What do you think they feel is most important? • Know your strengths & weaknesses as related to position • Have specific examples ready to share that reflect their requirements and/or values • Show interest in what they do…have a list of questions prepared Research Yourself - Know what you have to offer!

Types of Interviews Screening interview (in person/phone/video) • First encounter - 30 min. or so • Live video or recorded responses Selection interview (on-site) • Half or full day of interviews • Lunch / Dinner / Tour / Overnight visit • Meet multiple people One-on-One vs. Panel Interviews • Panel is multiple interviewers at a time Technical Interview • Career-specific questions, coding, and solve equations/ problems Case Interview • Interviewer engages candidate in discussion about a real or hypothetical business problem

  6. Be Prepared for Different Types of Interview Questions! Traditional • Basic questions about your resume/ experience Behavioral • Based on the notion that past performance is a good indicator of future performance • S-T-A-R (asked to recall a Situation or Task, explain the Action you took, and describe the Results) Technical • Coding/programming problems, questions about skills & level of knowledge, describe projects Case Style • Engage in hypothetical business problem to assess analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and ability to think under pressure Off-the-wall Questions 

Tell Your StoryPrepare a story for each category • A time when you saved the day. • A time when you learned from a mistake. • A time when you had to act without a supervisor’s guidance. • A time when you had to deal with a difficult person. • A time when you had to “turn-on-a-dime” and change quickly. • A time when you worked on a team. • A time when you took the initiative.

TraditionalTELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF • Prepare your answer – determine what you want your message to be • Do not answer it in general terms (NO life story or irrelevant information) • Think of it as a 1 – 2 minute “commercial” of your personal highlights • Focus on skills, accomplishments and relevant experiences IMPORTANT: Mention why are you interested in position/ field

  10. BehavioralTell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult person. How did you handle it? Situation or Task – While working at local clothing store, a frustrated customer needed to return an item. She became difficult when she learned no refund only store credit. Action – Explained to customer, I could try to find the item at another store and have it shipped to her. Result – Customer got her item in time for her special event. I saw her in the store again later in the summer.

What's the fewest number of times you have to use the scale to find the heavier ball? Tips: 1) Always prepare questions to ask 2) Ask well-informed questions - not readily available • What skills/experiences would make an ideal candidate? • What types of projects would I be working on? • What have you enjoyed most about working here? • What is the company and team culture like? • What constitutes success in this position? • What gets you most excited about the company’s future? • What is the next step in the recruiting process?

After the interview… Send a thank-you note! *You can send it electronically the same day of the interview or the next day; or *Hand-written, sent through snail mail, will set you apart from the competition! • In your note, restate your interest in the position, and thank the interviewer(s) for their consideration. • Follow up based on “next steps” instructions from interviewer

I think (employer name) is a good fit for me and the (position) would be a great opportunity. However, I am hoping that we can discuss the current salary offer. I have done some research on average salaries for NC State students in my field and, based on that, I am hoping for a salary in the range of $75,000 - $85,000.”
