Overview • Record flow and vacuum levels • Note time and stop pump • Remove drum covers • Remove used drums from position 8-1 KEEPING TRACK of which one is who • Clean and dry drum housings and orifices • Insert unused drums from position 1-8 • Put used drums in cases • Realign drums to starting position • Replace drum covers • Restart pump and record time • Check flow and vacuum levels • Put a document recording the duration of drums in sampler in drum case with used drums

  3. Stopping the Drum Sampler • Record flow and vacuum levels • Stop pump by unplugging the drum sampler power cord from the power strip mounted on the side of the instrument • Record time

  4. Removing Drum Covers • Remove drum covers, pulling hard on the center knob. • Keep track of the position they were removed from.

  5. Removing Drums • Clean out a large plastic bag with left over Nitrogen and regulator hose. • Place drum position template, conveniently located in Drum Sampler case, under plastic bag on a stable surface. • Carefully remove drums, starting with #8 and gently place in their appropriate position in the safety of the plastic bag.

  6. Cleaning Out Drum Housing • Wipe out interior of drum housings using alcohol and Kim wipes. • Using the remainder of a spent N2 cylinder, dry out housings. • Back flush orifices, starting at #8 and working back to #1.

  7. Insert Fresh Drums • Insert unused drums, starting at #1. • Slots in the back of the drum must align with the pin in the drum housing. • You will feel when the drum is properly seated. • The notches in drums #1-4 should be facing to the left, the notches in drums #5-8 should be facing to the right.   8. Stow sampled drums • Put sampled drums in the containers from which you removed the new drums • The case of containers is then sent back to Tom Cahill and UCD

  9. Aligning Drums • After the new drums are inserted properly they need to be aligned to the initial sampling position. • For the top and bottom rows the proper position is with the notch in the drum pointing to ~10 o’clock and ~4 o’clock, respectively. • If the drums are inserted properly aligning the top row correctly will automatically correctly align the bottom row. • Hold the “RESET” toggle switch up for 2 seconds, then toggle the “DURATION” switch to rotate the drums. Be patient, the system is a little sluggish to respond. • The system thinks that you are finished rotating the drums when you cease adjustments for longer than 2 seconds. • Once finished the system will rotate the drums back and forth, eventually landing on your final position. • To be further confused, consult the directions located within the drum sampler pelican case Insert photo of drum-notch alignment

  10. Restarting the sampler • Replace the drum covers. This takes quite a bit of force so don’t be timid. Really giv’er. Remember DON’T PUSH with your back, push with your thyroid. • Plug the sampler back into the power strip and note time. • Record vaccum and flow levels. • Put a piece of paper documenting the sampling duration of sampled drums and any other pertinent information into the case with sampled drums. • Record drum swap in GEOSummit log and on daily check sheet. • Send Tom Cahill an internet letter.
