  3. Zhou Dynasty: 1046-256 BCE Officially the longest dynasty lasting 790 years But it really only controlled China until 771 BCE – so for 257 years For the next 500 years, they pretended to rule but the real control was held by leaders in various small states (feudalism)

  4. Big trends under the Zhou Dynasty • The Mandate of Heaven is an ancient Chinese belief and philosophical idea that god (天; Tian) granted emperors the right to rule based on their ability to govern well and fairly.
