  2. Chiang Kai-shek Mao Tse-tung • Kuomintang (KMT) • “Nationalists” • in power from 1927-1949 • Chinese Communist Party (CCP) • in power from 1949-1976 • Communists are still in power in China

  3. What happened when the Qing Dynasty fell? • Dr. Sun Yat-sen tried to form a republic • Founder of the Kuomintang (KMT) • Based on the ‘Three Principles:’ • Nationalism • Democracy • Economic Security • But…

  4. 1916-1927 • China fell into political and economic collapse • local warlords seized power and battled each other for control • time of famine and attacks by bandits

  5. Meanwhile… • Foreign powers increased their influence • Gave into some of Japan’s “21 Demands” • Lost land to Japan in WWI’s Treaty of Versailles

  6. May 4th Movement, 1919 • Student protests began in Beijing • spread across China • Goal: strengthen China • reject Confucianism • learn from the West • Some turned to ideas of Marx and Lenin • Mao Tse-tung founded CCP in 1921

  7. 1923-19271st United Front of KMT & CCP • Goal: Defeat the warlords; unify China • Led by Sun Yat-sen • Supported by CCP and Soviet Union • 1925 ~ Dr. Sun died • Chiang Kai-shek became leader of the KMT

  8. Northern Expedition • Defeat of warlords • Drive out the foreigners • SUCCESSFUL!

  9. 1927Communist Exterminations • Shanghai Incident • 1927-1949: • Civil war between the CCP and KMT • Chiang Kai-shek firmly in power • believed that China’s power should be based on the Three Principles • but… slowly forming a fascist state

  10. Mao Escapes and Spreads the Communist Word • believed that Communists should seek support among the large peasant masses • worked to gain support of peasants in SE China
