Gray - common winterberryILVE in the state of Minnesota • There are around 400 species and most of them belong to the genus Ilex. • Commonly found in the United States • Grows from 5 to 15 feet in height • Berries and stems provide forage for wildlife • The common Winterberry does not have a very high tolerance for drought or cold. • Dioecious tree

  3. The simple, smooth, obovate to oblong-ovate leaves are sharply double toothed, with medium texture. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems and each leaf is 1 1/2 to 4 inches long, with a dark green color in the summer which then turns yellow in fall. Three years after planting, pistillate flowers begin to emerge in small clusters and staminate flowers develop on male plants with up to twelve flowers in a cluster. You are not able to determine the gender until now. Staminate flowers > < Pistillate Flowers
