  2. Personal Background • Retired Navy Commander • Taught Algebra II one year and Special Education one year • NJROTC Instructor 10 ½ years • Mississippi JROTC Director Since Jan 2009

  3. What is JROTC? • Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps • Navy established JROTC in 1966 • 620 NJROTC units • Helps ROTC/Academy applicants • Can enlist as E3 (E2 for Marines) • Focus on citizenship and character

  4. JROTC Mission • To instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

  5. NJROTC Curriculum • Navy Orientation and Basic Skills • Leadership • Citizenship and Government • Wellness, Fitness, and First Aid • Maritime History • Nautical Sciences • 4 year curriculum

  6. NJROTC Instructors • Retired Navy, USMC, USCG • Certified by the Navy. • School employee. • Units 150< rate 1 officer / 1 enlisted. • Wear uniforms when teaching. • Height / weight standards. • Pay based on active duty pay. • Earn state teacher retirement.

  7. NJROTC Instructors • Officers (W2-O6) must have bachelors degree to be employed as SNSI. • Enlisted (E6-E9) must have associates degree within 5 years of employment. • Team coach for drill team, athletic team, academic team, orienteering team, marksmanship team, color guard. • Weekend / after-school work.

  8. Instructor Pay • Minimum is the difference between retired pay and the active duty pay and allowances, excluding incentive pay, would receive if ordered to active duty. • Schools may pay more. • May qualify for Troops to Teachers incentives in Mississippi.

  9. Instructor Certification • Board meets in April and October • Applications due 1 month prior to board • Certification valid for 3 years • Eligible to apply 1 year before retirement • Application form, photo, interview, height/weight/body fat, service record • Eligible up to 6 years after retirement
