  4. Positive Reinforcement • Encourages behavior by offering rewards • Examples… • Pay • Promotions • Time off • Praise • Motivating with rewards has always been a debate • Example – “Carrot or the stick” • Angry Birds – Big success (provides a lot of positive reinforcement)

  6. Negative Reinforcement • Taking something away as a result of behavior • Examples… • A bad smell is taken away from taking a shower • Behavior-taking a shower • What is taken away-Smell • Taking hours away from an employee that is misbehaving • Behavior-misbehaving • What is taken away-hours

  8. Punishment • Provides undesirable consequences to undesirable behavior • Examples… • Taking away privileges • Probation • Fining • Demotion • Firing • Reduces undesirable behavior but… • Least effective in motivating employees to do a good job

  10. Extinction • Attempts to reduce or eliminate undesirable behavior by withholding reinforcement when behavior occurs • Example… • Withhold a reward (such as pay raise) until the employee performs to set standards
