  2. Has anything been savored in this lost generation? Jake Barnes, heroic war veteran, now holds a meaningless “paper-pushing” job. Is there no honor left in bravely fighting for ones country? Jake can’t seem to find true friendship, true love, and above all true happiness.

  3. Jake needs to re-capture the manly image he once embodied. He must be proud of his status as a hero. Jake can not let his war injury prevent him from expressing his masculinity, and must try to remain indifferent to his injury both physically and emotionally.

  4. Will Jake’s war injury prevent him form pursuing a relationship with Lady Brett Ashley, who in a haze of alcohol-fueled confusion seems to never know what she wants? Brett needs to learn to love Jake for the person he truly is. It is obvious to the reader that amongst a generation of lost hope, these two have found light in each other. Will this light burn out if these two do not realize what they are feeling?

  5. Robert Cohn has lost pride in his identity, having being tormented and ridiculed at Princeton. Will he ever have the courage to find who he truly is? Can Robert and Jake coexist while they both have feelings for the same girl. Are both of them feeling true love? Can we rule out lust as one of Jake’s driving forces because of his injury?

  6. Lady Brett Ashley doesn’t fit the image of the loving, prudent war nurse. Has she become detached from her true image as well? Can she not empathize enough with Jake to see past his war injury? It is clear that Brett does not like Michael as she often comes close to romantic encounters with Jake. Will Brett follow her heart and be with Jake, the man she truly loves?
