Drama Key Terms • Drama – a play; literature meant to be performed. • Lines are read by characters • Props – items that the characters use within the play • Can be just about anything: a book, a hat, presents, bottles, boxes, etc. • Set – the decorated stage of the play; includes backdrops, furniture, doorways, windows, etc.

  3. Stage Directions – additional information concerning the staging of the play. • Actions/movements, costumes, setting, props, sound effects, other directions • Written in Italics and set off by brackets [ ] • Not to be read aloud during a performance

  4. Dialogue – talking between two or more characters • Monologue – one character’s (usually long) speech to those around him or her. • Soliloquy – a speech in which a character talks to himself or herself (and the audience.) None of the other characters can hear this. The character is thinking out loud.

  5. Drama Organization Acts (use Roman numerals, I, II, III…) Scenes (1, 2, 3, 4 or i, ii, iii, etc.)

  6. Reading Comprehension • Visualize the action – in your mind, try to picture the action unfolding. Try to see the characters, the setting, etc. • Dialogue – the action within a play is told through the characters’ talking to each other.
