  2. Arizona Facts • The Grand Canyon State • 48th State • Population is 6,482,505 • State Capital is Phoenix • The State’s official neckwear is a bola tie • There is a fountain in Fountain Hills that is believed to be the tallest in the world • Arizona is one of the four corner states

The Arizona Landscape • The Grand Canyon • Carved by the Colorado River • It is about 277 miles long and up to 18 miles wide. • Home to approximately 70 species of mammals, 250 species of birds, 25 types of reptiles and five species of amphibians. • Painted desert • A big area of land where erosion has caused layers of sediment that looks like rainbows • Petrified Forest National Park • One of the biggest areas of petrified wood in the world

Arizona’s Climate • Arizona is dry and has little rainfall • Temperatures vary a lot due to Arizona’s size and differences in elevation • One third of Arizona is a plateau which has higher altitudes than the lower desert, and is much cooler climate • 80% sunshine for the state • 86% sunshine for Phoenix • Gets 12 inches of rainfall a year
