  1. ANIMALS WITH BACKBONES

  2. Backbone • Is an animal's spine. • It also means determination and strength.

  3. Five main classes of animals with backbones 1.Mammals 2.Birds 3.Fishes 4.Reptiles 5.Amphibians

  4. Characteristics of mammals • A flexible neck with seven cervical vertebrae • Mammals also show enhanced neocortex development • Sound is produced by the larynx (a modified region of the trachea) limbs are oriented vertically • The mammalian heart has 4 chambers • Internal temperature is generally high • Egg development occurs in the uterus (excluding monotremata)

  5. Characteristics of mammals • They have sweat glands • A single jaw bone • Diaphragm • Three bones for a middle ear • Give birth to young alive • Feeds milk to its young • Has hair on its body

  6. Habitats • On and under the land • In water • In the air

  7. Examples of mammals:

  8. GorillaCat Dog

  9. Characteristics of birds • warm blooded (endothermic) • vertebrates (they have a backbone and an internal skeleton) • breathe using lungs (not gills) • an outer covering of feathers - this feature is not shared with any other vertebrate group • reproduce by laying eggs

  10. Habitats • On the air • On the land

  11. Nene Goose Spur-winged Plover Griffin Vulture

  12. Characteristics of fish • Fish are vertebrates (animals with a backbone) • have gills, scales and fins on their body • In water Habitat

  13. Examples of fish Maui Ocean Center

  14. Swordtails Velvet swordtails

  15. Characteristics of reptiles • Reptiles are a class of animal with scaly skin. • They are cold blooded and are born on land • Ectodermic • Lateral line • Two chambered heart • Gills used for respiration • No external ears • No eye lids

  16. Habitats • They live in hot deserts, swamps, tropic jungles, dark caves and even in the ocean there is many places where they can live you see.

  17. Examples of reptiles Anole Turtle

  18. Examples of reptiles Chameleon American Alligator

  19. Amphibians characteristics • Amphibians are cold-blooded animals, meaning they do not have a constant body temperature but instead take on the temperature of their environment. • They have moist, scale less skin that absorbs water and oxygen • The thin skin of amphibians contains many glands, among them poison glands that protect certain species against predators. • Some amphibians protect themselves from enemies by changing color to blend in with their surroundings.

  20. Habitats • Amphibians start their life cycle underwater and move to land on the onset of their adulthood. They can adapt to a wide range of habitats, even man-made ones. • The preferable habitats of amphibians are wet and damp areas such as wetlands, shallow ponds and marsh pools.
