  2. Classroom Expectations • At River Heights students have a variety of rights and freedoms, but with them, they also have responsibilities and expectations. In my room, I believe in creating a harmonious agreement between student and teacher. This is called an ‘accord’. • ACCEPTANCE • CONTROL • CONTRIBUTION • ORGANIZATION • RESPECT • DISCUSSION

  3. Acceptance

  4. Control

  5. Contribution

  6. Organization

  7. Respect

  8. Discussion

  9. My Teaching Philosophy • I believe that students learn best when given the chance to involve themselves with the material in many different ways. A successful classroom does not have just one type of learning, but many. The strive for my classroom to mix equal parts of: • Discussion – Talking about the material • Lectures – Listening about the material • Demonstrations – Watching about the material • Assignments – Writing about the material • Collaboration – Working together to form new understandings about the material • I believe in an classroom that focuses on organization, but I also believe in creating a laid back atmosphere that makes students feel comfortable. I believe in creating a safe work environment. Most of all, I believe students will rise to what is expected of them. I have high expectations, but it is my goal to help you meet those expectations.

  10. Deal Breakers • Deal Breakers are what I consider to be non-negotiable classroom behaviors. Any one of these will earn you a trip to the office and/or a phone call home. • Using Ugly or Hateful Words • Physical Violence • Destruction of School Property

  11. Three Strikes System • First Strike: • I will calmly ask you to stop doing whatever it is which is causing a disruption • Second Strike: • If the behavior continues, I will write your name on the board as a final warning • Third Strike: • I will ask you to step outside the room until you are ready to return • If the behavior continues after that, or persists across multiple classes, my next step will be to arrange for you to make up the time after school. • If the behavior continues to persist, my next step will be to arrange a meeting with principal, or to phone your parents and arrange to discuss the issue with them.

  12. The Golden Rule If the expectations of the school and this classroom are confusing to you, remember that you can always fall back on the golden rule to rate your own behavior: What you do in the classroom CANNOT be negatively effecting the learning of other students. In Canada, school is a right, but it is also a privilege. You have the right to attend school, and to learn and to be successful, but you DO NOT have the right to disrupt the learning of others.
