  3. What is Persuasion? • Persuasive speaking includes 3 motives • Make your audience believe what you believe • Make your audience think like you think • Cause your audience to do what you want them to do

  4. What is Persuasion • Three Sources of Persuasion • Logos • Pathos • Ethos

  5. Logos • the thinking process that allows the listener to arrive at logical conclusions • EXAMPLES: • Taking public transportation to work will cut your monthly gas costs. • Taking public transportation to work will decrease the wear and tear on your personal vehicle.

  6. Pathos • the use of emotional appeals and language to relate to the listener’s needs, drives, and desires • EXAMPLES: • Imagine the ease of letting someone else drive you to work while you sip your coffee and catch up on your book. • Think of how much less stress you have to deal with when you aren’t the one battling through traffic during rush hour.

  7. Ethos • the speaker’s character in the minds of the audience • EXAMPLES: • Credibility • Reliability • Sincerity

Types of Audiences • Supportive Audience- • Friendly, like you and what you have to say • EXAMPLES: • Speaking to your friends and family • Republican politician speaking to republicans • Uncommitted Audience- • Neutral, need information to make up minds • EXAMPLES: • You speaking to a group of people you don’t know • Speaking to people who don’t know anything about the topic

Types of Audiences (continued) • Indifferent Audience- • Apathetic, bored, don’t think what you say applies to them • EXAMPLES: • Me teaching a group of 13 and 14 year olds science • Your mom lecturing you about cleaning your room • Opposed Audience- • Hostile, dislike you and what you have to say • EXAMPLES: • Obama speaking to a group of republicans • Speaking to a group of your enemies
