  3. ACTIVATING PRIOR KNOWLEDGE All 3 of these images are of dragons, but where they came from and their uses are very different. Think/Pair/Share: Discuss these pictures with your partner. What do you think they can tell us about the people who made it and why they made it? Just as you figured out from these images, art can tell us a lot more than the content of what is pictured. Today, we will analyze Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance art and discover what their differences can tell us about these time periods.

  4. Concept Development Fill out the chart as we analyze these 3 types of art. Review these European time periods: Classical: from ancient Greece and Rome Medieval: from the Middle Ages Renaissance: the Re-birth of classical culture in Europe after the Middle Ages. Graphic organizer from www.teachtci.com

  5. Concept Development Look at the classical column… To show importance of leaders, gods, goddesses • Lifelike and perfect • Nude or in togas • Calm faces, little emotion • Activity and motion showed. • Flat background Think/Pair/Share: How does the art above show the characteristics of classical art?

  6. Concept Development Fill in the medieval column. To show importance of leaders, gods, goddesses To teach religion to people who could not read • Lifelike and perfect • Nude or in togas • Calm faces, little emotion • Activity and motion showed. • Flat background • Not lifelike/ more important people were bigger. • Religious topics • Fully dressed • Serious faces • 1 color background Think/Pair/Share: What is different about the characteristics in Classical and Medieval Art?

  7. Concept Development Look at the Renaissance column… Perspective: the appearance of distance or depth on a flat surface, as in a painting. To show importance of people & nature, not only religion • Lifelike and 3D. • Religious and non-religious topics • Nude or clothed • Activity, motion showed • Faces show emotion. • Background showed perspective (depth).

  8. Guided Practice/ Whiteboards Discuss with your partner, then write on your whiteboard:Look at these three examples: 1. Which one do you think is the best example of medieval art? Why? 2. Which of these do you think is classical art? Why? 3. Which of these do you think is Renaissance art? Why? A. B. C.

  9. Why? A. B. C.

  10. Closing question Compare the columns… Think/Pair/ Share: In what ways was Renaissance art a “re-birth” of classical art? In other words, how are they the same? What was new? To show importance of leaders, gods, goddesses To show importance of people & nature, not only religion To teach religion to people who could not read • Lifelike and perfect • Nude or in togas • Calm faces, little emotion • Activity and motion showed. • Flat background • Not lifelike/ more important people were bigger. • Religious topics • Fully dressed • Serious faces • 1 color background • Lifelike and 3D. • Religious and non-religious topics • Nude or clothed • Activity, motion showed • Faces show emotion. • Background showed perspective (depth).

  11. Relevance Why did we learn this? • Art is often a reflection of the time period from which it is made. By studying Renaissance art, we can see how aspects of classical culture were re-born (or brought back) in art. • It is going to be on your test. • Other reasons?

  12. Independent Practice Homework • Write a one to two paragraph summary of the purpose and characteristics of Renaissance art.

  13.
