  1. Preparing for the EPSRC Data Policy Framework DCC Workshop, University of Glasgow, 8th May 2014 Anna Clements Head of Research Data and Information Services University Library, University of St Andrews akc@st-andrews.ac.uk @annakclements

  2. Strategy • VP Research taken ownership • Academic-led review looking at • Storage capacity and nature – consolidation and growth • Data definitions – active, shared, archive • Funder and Institutional compliance • Stewardship incl. responsibilities and metadata • Sustainability EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  3. Some key points from review … “We need to avoid the idea of a data repository as “a place where data goes to die”. “.. should be designed to act as a hub to encourage and facilitate cross-School interactions …. data science … ‘ “Provide training and awareness in terms of both processes (how to store data) and opportunities (who has what expertise)‘ “ .. broadening accessibility means that datasets must also be suitably annotated so that they can be found easily .. .. from simple keyword associations (“tagging”), through to structured metadata such as CERIF, up to full linked open metadata.” “ Many subject areas already have multiple options for data storage, which need to be integrated rather than competed with.” EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  4. 12 months to go … ongoing programme of work • Policy development • Institutional registry & repository • Active data management • Expertise, skills & advice EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  5. Policy development • About to go for ‘second reading’ to Academic Council • Based on Edinburgh’s policy EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  6. Institutional registry & repository • Pure as registry … possibly also as repository • User Group priority • Project in progress – run by Library • Rich, contextual information Datacite, Cerif for Datasets, others • Single interface for users EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  7. Impact Activities Industry / SME’s Interface HEI – Strategic Planning, Benchmarking REF, RCUK SFC, HESA Public, Media Recognition / Impact Collaborations Research Pools Indicators Case Studies Award/ recognition WoS, arXiv, PubMed, Scopus… Measures Entered Dissemination// Engagement Bibtex, Refman Manual Input University Structure [HR] Entered Uploaded Harvested Entered Research Information System (PURE) Staff Records [HR] Pulled In Fed Out Student Records [Registry] Linked Linked Projects, Grants, KT [Finance] Full Text Repository Open Access Research data sets (multiple locations and formats)

  8. Pure 4.18 release EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  9. Finding use cases for the pilot EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  10. EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  11. Components of a data management service : Digital Curation Centre:http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/how-guides • CRIS-IR

  12. Active data management • Research Computing Team • Advice for technical aspects of grant applications incl. data management planning • Data storage project in progress • Initial budget agreed … now we have to spend it! EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  13. Research Computing Survey 2013 – ball park figures http://research-computing.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/2013/03/18/how-much-research-data-do-we-have-and-where-do-we-store-it/ EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  14. Expertise, skills & advice • Developing new web-site aimed at researchers • One-stop portal for support & training • Aim to build network of experts • Researcher-led working with Library and ITS • Maximise impact of research data as well as compliance requirements • New roles emerging • Communication & collaboration & co-ordination EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  15. Components of a data management service : Digital Curation Centre:http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/how-guides Enhancing the Research Process CRIS-IR

  16. Biggest challenges • Relationship with research process? • Right balance between central and school development • How to build the skills needed .. Researchers and Library/ITS professionals • What part should (inter)national data centre infrastructure play? • What about scientific publishers .. ? EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  17. Biggest challenges cont. • Just what data is worth preserving? • Chemists say very little; Historians say everything “We need to avoid the idea of a data repository as “a place where data goes to die”. • This is where discipline-specific expertise is so important • Data doesn’t have the homogeneity in either process or metadata and representation that publications have EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  18. Biggest challenges cont. • Where does the money come from? • Is POSF acceptable? Or should we add to Indirects … despite being asked to reduce them ? • Are others willing to share their experiences? • How do review panels make a judgement? Is this transparent? • Have grants been rejected/pushed back? • Feels like ‘the blind leading the blind’at the moment EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014

  19. 12 months to go … how ready are we? • Policy development • Institutional registry & repository • Active data management • Expertise, skills & advice EPSRC readiness, DCC Glasgow May 8th 2014
