4. Example – “The Monkey’s Paw” “It had a spell put on it by an old fakir . . . A very holy man. He wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow. He put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it.” Page 88 This quotation shows the motif of an enchanted object. The object is a magical monkey’s paw. It also is associated with additional motifs: wishes and the number three. Readers can infer a lot about the mood the passage based on the phrase “fate ruled people’s lives” and “those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow.” This implies that things might not necessarily always be positive with the paw. This gives the mood an ominous and mysterious feel. It also foreshadows something negative might happen if the Whites use the paw.
