  2. Birthplace & Family • Guru HarRai Sahib was the son of Baba GurditaJi the eldest son of Guru Hargobindji. • He was born on January 16th, 1630, to Mata Nihal Kaur Ji (also known as Mata Ananti) • Guru HarRaiJi was the grandson of Guru HarGobindJi.

The Grandfather and Grandson • There was a time when Guru HarRaiJi came back from horse back riding and in his rush to greet his Grandfather, Guru HarGobindJi, he accidentally caught his clothes on the thorns of a rose bush. • The bush got jostled and some of the rose petals fell to the ground. • Young HarRaiJi was distraught and he began to cry. • His Grandfather consoled him and reminded him to be careful in all his movements, so as to avoid harming anything in his environment.

  5. Guru HarRaiJi’sLife • Family– Guru HarRaiJi was married to Mata Kishan Kaur Ji (SulakhniJi) & had two sons: Sri Ram RaiJi and Sri HarKrishan Sahib Ji (who later became the 8th Guru). • Guruship– Guru HarGobindJienthroned Sri HarRaias his successor at the tender age of 14, on March 3rd, 1644.

Guru HarRaiJi’sContributions • Strengthened the military – Guru HarRaiJi boosted the military spirit of the Sikhs, but never engaged in any direct conflict with the Mughal Empire • Herbal Medicines Hospital – Guru HarRaiJi established an Ayurvedic herbal hospital and research center at Kiratpur Sahib. Patients were given free treatment. • The hospital even saved the life of Prince Dara Shikoh, son of the Emperor Shahjehan

  8. Environmentalist • Guru HarRaiJiwas an Environmentalist – Guru HarRaiJi loved nature and maintained an exquisite garden and zoo.

  9. Protector of the Gurbani • The emperor Aurangzeb framed some false charges against Guru HarRaiJiand called him to appear in his court. Guru HarRaiJi sent his elder son, Baba Ram Rai to clear the charges. • Ram Raiappeared on behalf of Guru HarRaiJi in the royal court and tried to clarify the misunderstandings regarding Guru Ghar and Sikh faith. However, to please the emperor, he changed one word of Guru Nanak Dev ji’s hymns. When Guru HarRaiJiwas informed about this incident, he immediately excommunicated Ram RaiJi – his eldest son - from the Sikh Panth and never met him again. • Guru HarRai Sahib installed his younger son, HarKrishan, as the Eighth Nanak and he then passed away on October 6th, 1661 at Kiratpur Sahib.
