  1. Demonstrating the Value You Bring to Your Job Bob Emery, DrPH Safety, Health, Environment & Risk Management

  2. Why Are We Here? • The mission of any university is: • Teaching • Research • Service • Notice administration is not in the mission! • Hence, the reason administration is always scrutinized when budgets are tight!

  3. Demonstrating Value • The ability to quickly communicate or display what you do and how you add value to the core missions of: • Teaching • Research • Service

  4. Today’s Case Study • To describe the process being used in SHERM to quantify and display the value the administrative staff bring to the program! • Effort underway with full understanding and consent of staff • Consists of: • Clarification of roles and expectations • Creation of succinct summaries of tasks (and volumes) • Education of importance of “value added” demonstration • Client surveys

  5. Start With the Basics • The classic question: “What do you do?” • Note one page summary of tasks and volumes • Key tool for the important response • In this case, the “why do you do it” follow up question can be addressed quickly as well

  6. The Next Question • How much do you cost and what do you add to the process beyond the hiring rate?

  7. SHERM Administrative Support Staff(hypothetical values)

  8. SHERM Administrative Support Staff(hypothetical values) What do we get for the $60,000 difference?

  9. Intuitive Response • Experience • Loyalty • Reputation • Ability to anticipate problems, issues, and avoid them • Ability to do things better, quicker? • How might we measure assess these claims?

  10. Client Survey • Distribution of client survey to customers • Questions developed with input from staff • Results pending

  11. Wrap Up • With finite resources, insitutions will have to constantly re-assess budgets and examine all aspects as they relate to the core missions • The ability to quickly and succinctly demonstrate what you do and the value you add to the process is critical • The process of demonstrating added value is a team effort, and may be a bit foreign to even some managers • Working together, a more compelling case can be made

  12. Questions and Discussion • Your questions for me, or any of the staff?
