  2. Normal new born Definition- Full term, Vertex presentation born after completed 37 weeks,2.5kg birth Wt. Early diagnosis of congenital malformation. Polyhydramnios Oligohydramnios Single umbilical artery Gross external cong.anamolies.

  3. First day examination. Vitals Weight Head circumference Color Breathing Limbs LEVELS OF NICU CARE- 3 Levels.

  4. BREAST FEEDING Start within ½ hr in normal delivery and 4 hrs in caesarian delivery. If not possible expressed barest milk-good for 4-6 hrs at room temp.,12 hrs in refrigerator. If not other mothers milk If not formula milk How to prepare? How to give? How much to give?

  5. Bath Delayed till second day. In babies Wt <2kg only sponging Bath in PT babies after cord falls. Warm water ,not more than 3 min. Clean the genitals last. Avoid daily bath in winter. Talcum powder not necessary.

  6. Oil massage Yes Oil that suits the baby After 2-3 weeks Olive oil, coconut oil Avoid mustard oil.

  7. Umbilical cord Falls in 7-10 days. Not to touch with unclean hands Can apply Neosporin powder, ethyl alcohol No dressing

  8. Care of eyes Don’t apply kajal Instillation of colostrum decreases the chances of conjunctivitis. Eye drops only if eyes are sticky.

  9. Cloths and immunization • Dress should be loose • Soft,cotton • Open from front or behind • No plastic nappies. • Thick,soft,absorbant material nappies. • BCG,OPV AND HEP. B at birth. • Regular vaccination. • Ask doctor about new vaccines. • Do not avoid for the risk Of minor adverse effects.

  10. Danger signs Bleeding from any site Jaundice Not passing stool in first 24 hrs and urine in first 48 hrs. Poor feeding. Apnea Excess crying Seizures Cyanosis and difficulty in breathing.

  11. Supplements Multi vitamin drops including Vit D in all babies till 6 months of age. Calcium Iron drops started after 3-4 weeks. Simyl MCT oil and HMF sachets for pre term/LBW babies.

  12. Common neonatal problems Vomiting-Normal if spits 2-3 times, small quantity. -Up right position,Burping,anti emetic drops 2.Constpation- Up to 7 days normal. -Can give glucose water. 3.Diarrhea- What is normal. -If exclusive breast feed-Reassurance

See the Quantity,Frequency,Color,Smell. 4.-Jaundice- Abnormal if in first 24 hrs. -Mild yellowish-sclera-normal. -Consult immediately when in doubt. 5.Hiccough,Sneezing,Yawning- Normal, Physiological. 6.Dehydration fever-More in summer. -Frequent feeding, no excess wrapping. 7.Superficial infections-Conjunctivitis -Pustules -Umbilical sepsis

  14. CONTINUED 8.Excess crying-Mostly due to colic. 9.Evening colic-Cuddling,kissing,taking to a drive,patting,prone positioning. -Anti spasmodic drops, Application of Hing,ajwaine to umbilical area. 10.Breath holding spells 11.Choking episode 12.Excess sleepiness.

  15. NORMAL AILMENTS Mastitis neonatorum Vaginal bleeding, discharge Caput succedaneum Cephalohematoma Cradle cap-coconut oil application Flat head Extended legs in breech delivery

  16. Watering from eyes- Eye massage, drops Umbilical hernia-Common salt application Nappy rash-Coconut oil, cream Erythema toxicum-Disappear by 4-5 days. Peeling of skin-Liquid paraffine,olive oil Cutis marmorata Millia Stork bites Mongolian spots Sub conjunctival haemorrage.
