England’s Treatment of Its Colonies • England Pursued a Policy of Mercantilism • More colonies • Supply of bullion – gold and silver. • Balance of Trade • Laws to enforce mercantilism – Navigations Acts • All colonial foreign trade must be done through England.
Activity • What were the Navigation Acts and how did they affect colonial relationship with Britain? • Complete the Geography skill builder activity on page 67.
Tension with Colonies • Massachusetts’ charter was revoked after colonial merchants resisted English authority. • It became a royal colony • Dominion of New England was created by King James II by uniting all colonies from Maine to NJ. • Sir Edmund Andros created more problems in the colonies • Glorious Revolution changed the situation.
Activity • Why did England take action against Massachusetts? • Why was the Dominion of New England formed? How was it supposed to work? What finally happened to it? • What was Glorious Revolution? How did it change the colonial relationship with England?
Towards Colonial Self-Government • Policy of Salutary Neglect • As long as the colonist obeyed their economic obligation to the home country they would be left alone. • Toward Self-Government • The governors were influenced by the colonists. • They paid for their salaries. • Gradually system of self government developed.

Slavery in the South • 200,000 African Slaves by 1750 • Slave Trade was part of triangular trade • Middle Passage was a hard experience for most African slaves. • Slave Work • 80-90% worked in the field • 10-20% worked as domestic servants and learned to become artisans • Full-time work began at age 12 till death.
Africans Coping with Life • Maintaining Culture and Family • Wove Baskets and molded Pottery • Collectively raised Children • African dancing traditions • Slaves Also resisted their masters & sometimes openly revolted • Stono Rebellion in 1739
