The Regional support In 2004 the Piedmont Region started to play a major role in supporting aerospace research 2004 Call on Aerospace: 3,40 M€ 2006 Call on Aerospace: 2,38 M€ 2007 “Innovative Platforms” call on Aerospace (20 M€). Pre-applications presented by clusters including large AS companies, universities and SME’s are presently under evaluation. If all successful, the Politecnico share will attain 6-7 M€ for 2008-10, i.e. more than twice the value of the whole 2006 budget for aerospace research

  14. Research activities in Aerospace at DELEN Special relevance is given to satellite navigation systems, where the Department is active in the European context. Co-operation with ASI, ESA, Alenia Aeronautica, Thales Alenia Space … Overall DELEN funding: 1 to 2 Millions Euro Projects: Plasma thrusters Antennas for space applications Micro air vehicle Satellite and optical Communications Circuits and microwaves Satellite Navigation

Aerospace Education at Politecnico di Torino The aerospace education activities span different Faculties and Departments (about 50 professors, most from DIASP) • Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering • Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering • PhD in Aerospace Engineering • Post BSc Course: Aerospace and avionic systems engineering (supported by Alenia Aeronautica) • International Post MSc Course MOSAIC for South-East Europe students (supported by Alenia Aeronautica) • International Post MSc Course: Space exploration and development systems - SEEDS (supported by Thales Alenia Space)

Aerospace Education at Politecnico di Torino • One of the largest programmes in Italy and Europe: • The second-third largest engineering programme of Politecnico • Over 200 freshmen each year, and growing • Over 100 graduates each year • Over 40% students come from other regions • Almost 20% female, and growing • Almost 30% of the students in the graduate programme spend at least 6 months to follow courses, write their final projects, and often obtain a double degree in Universities outside Italy • 28 exchange programmes and 7 double degree agreements, growing • About 20 students each year from F, D, E, UK • Member of the European excellence network PEGASUS of Aerospace MSc Courses • About 10 new PhD students each year, most funded by industries

The International Master in Space Exploration and Development Systems (SEEDS) Italian –French – German Master course started and coordinated by PoliTO Focus on the Human Space Exploration of Space It links Torino, Toulouse and Bremen, historical poles of EU industrial activities in manned space exploration Strong support by Thales Alenia Space (teaching, tutors, fellowships), and by Astrium, OHB … A joint Project Work in sequence in the three I-F-D sites with a final report discussed in ESA Mixed academic and industrial teaching staff
