  3. Break-up of the Ottoman Empire • France-Syria and Lebanon. • United Kingdom-Palestine and Iraq. • Saudi Arabia became free • The modern Turkey was created • Today, Turkey is the largest Muslim country in Europe.

  4. The State of Israel • Israel created in 1948. • Three reasons for Israel to be created • Zionism, • Anti-Semitism • The Holocaust.

  5. Zionism • Zionism is a Jewish movement • goal was to establish a Jewish homeland (country) in Palestine • Started by Theodor Herzl

  6. The Balfour Declaration • Britain issued the Balfour Declaration • Britain would work toward the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. • Zionism achieved its goal with the creation of Israelin 1948

  7. European Anti-Semitism • Anti-Semitism-hostility toward or prejudice against Jews or Judaism. • Anti-Semitism began to spread throughout Europe.

  8. World War II • Hitler’s Nazi Party took away the rights of Jews • Jews were no longer German citizens and removed them from • their jobs • businesses • schools • Homes

  9. The Holocaust • Hitler’s “Final Solution” to rid the earth of Jews • resulted in the murder of at least six million Jews • the deaths of millions of other Europeans • Jews that could flee Europe to Palestine • Holocaust ended with Germany’s defeat in World War II in 1945
