Registration / Capacity • All vessels must be properly registered in their home state and display numbers as per state law (forward half of hull, on both sides) as well as carry original registration certificates • Hoofers boats exempt by state statute (documentation letter on all keelboats) • Boats over 5 net tons must be registered with USCG • All motorboats must carry capacity plates which show max weight and number of people • Sailboats, canoes, kayaks, inflatables exempt • Basic formula for 150lbs people on a calm day: (in feet)

  3. Waste Disposal • No waste can be dumped in inland waters, navigable waters or within 3 nautical miles of shore • Must use holding tanks for heads • Illegal to dump garbage greater than 1 inch within 3-12 miles offshore • Illegal to dump dunnage, lining & packing, materials that float within 25 miles of shore • Illegal to dump plastics anywhere

  4. Basic Chart Symbols • All chart symbols available in NOAA Chart No. 1 • All NOAA charts available online for free • http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/chartno1.htm

  5. Sources for local knowledge • Navigation Charts • Local Notice to Mariners • Report changes to ATONs, new charts, channel depths, naval operations, regattas, etc… • USCG Coast Pilot • Provides information about harbors, anchorages and other useful information • Light List • Gives light and sound patterns for ATONs • Boating almanacs • VHF Weather Stations (WX1 – WX5) • Talk with local yacht clubs and other sailors
