The Fair Work Ombudsman • Independent government agency • We make sure that everyone’s rights at work are protected, understood and enforced • We work with both employees and employers • Eg. we provide free assistance and advice • Eg. we investigate complaints • Natalie James is the Fair Work Ombudsman and is supported by 800 staff around Australia • Fair Work Act 2009

  7. Minimum wages • You must be paid at least your minimum wage for each hour that you work • Minimum wages are set by: • Modern award • National Minimum Wage ($16.37 per hour) • Annual Wage Review may result in increases to minimum rates of pay

  9. Watch out for… • Being asked to work for free • Being given goods or services instead of pay • Having money taken out of your pay • Being asked to give your employer an ABN • Not being given a payslip

  11. Case Study - Rana • Expected to arrive 30 minutes early to set up for no extra pay • Hourly rate too low but worried she’ll lose her job if she complains • What should she do? What are her rights?

  12. Case Study - Ali • Ali only works a few hours a week. • His boss never lets him have time off when his kids get sick. • What should he do? What are his rights?
