Teacher Certification • Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum Certification Online Module • Designed to prepare ESE teachers to become certified/Highly Qualified in core areas • Will be available for all teachers to use when it is launched. (Summer 2005) • Self-paced tutorial of skills needed to pass Middle Grades Certification Exam. • Not for inservice points or college credit

  4. PDA - ESE • PDA-ESE • Free online professional development provided through your area FDLRS/HRD Coordinating unit. Each of seven modules constitutes 60 hours for recertification. • http://www.pda-ese.org/

  6. School Grade Changes Changes for 2004-05 • Raise Writing proficiency to 3.5 • Include students with disabilities and limited English proficiency in learning gains • FCAT scores only (not alternate assessments) • Full academic year (enrolled in Survey 2 and 3)

  7. Title II Part B • Florida anticipates $9 million dollars for 2005 – 2006 (July 1, 2006) • Nationally, $269 million appropriated • $120 million restricted to High School Mathematics, specifically, under-prepared 9th grade students. • Awards for FY 05 have just been announced.

Math/Science Initiative • Math/Science Summit---Jan/Feb 2005 Outlined a course of action that should be pursued by districts, higher education, and state government to ensure that mathematics and science education receive the attention necessary to implement changes to the current levels of teaching and learning of these disciplines.

Math-Science Summit Recommendations to Legislature and Governor • Establish a Governor’s Commission • Legislation and appropriations for a comprehensive, statewide, systemic program to enhance effectiveness of mathematics and science teachers • Legislation and appropriations to increase production of college graduates in STEM and STEM education fields (incentives and rewards)

Math-Science Summit • Draft Charge to the Commission • Strengthen achievement in Mathematics and Science of all Florida K-12 students • Increase the number of K-12 students actively engaged in advanced mathematics and science learning • Increase substantially the number of college students receiving degrees in the STEM disciplines to fill business/industry needs • Increase the number of graduates in mathematics and science education to meet 75% of Florida’s need for teachers

FCAT Science – Update • Achievement Levels - recommendations from educators • Grades 5 and 8 in January 2005. • Grade 11 in September 2005. • Citizens, business leaders, and education administrators – review/revise recommendations in October/November 2005. • DOE staff review/analysis and recommendations for SBE in November or December 2005. • Achievement Levels reported or retrofitted to results beginning in spring 2006. • Science included in school grading accountability in 2006-2007.

  16. Sunshine State Standards • Current Standards were adopted in 1996 • A Mid-term Review was conducted by FLDOE in 2001 • 2005 Review is to determine what improvements can be made and to make necessary changes to ensure that SSS reflect up-to-date content and necessary skills

  17. Improvements… • Combining benchmarked standards from within or from different content areas • Increasing the rigor and relevance • Deleting standards that might be covered in other areas or are no longer essential • User-friendly to curriculum developers, teachers, students and parents

  18. Improvements… • FLDOE wants to ensure that student achievement difficulties are not created by a lack of rigor and relevance in the SSS

  19. SSS… • It is not expected that massive changes will be made • It is not expected that changes will impact our assessment system (FCAT) • It is expected that the number of benchmarks in all subjects will be reduced

  20. Process • Analysis of SSS by several educational organizations, including FLDOE • Internet-based stakeholder input system related to specific benchmarks • Widespread stakeholder review of draft revisions will be conducted through focus groups and online input

  21. Sunshine State Standards Review 2005 • Stakeholder Input will be compiled in May 2005 • Review of analyses by the Department of Education and development of a blueprint for the scope of the revisions by June 1, 2005 • Drafting of revisions by August 1, 2005

  22. Tentative Timeline • Stakeholder review of draft revisions by September 15, 2005 • State Board of Education adoption in December 2005

  23. Tentative Timeline • District and school planning and professional development for implementation through August 2006 • Implementation in classrooms for the 2006-07 school year
